Get Your House Whipped Into Shape With These Simple Ideas

I kind of have a love-hate relationship with organization…especially closet organization. I love being organized, but I don’t like the process of getting organized. Every home you live in is a unique space that requires unique solutions for the organization. There’s no one size fits all solution for any closet or home. But there are definitely some commonalities. In the video below, I’m walking you through my master closet and my overflow closet. This video was shot right after we moved into the new house. If you’re looking for a more updated video make sure you check out the ones below. Keep scrolling to see how we organized the kids’ toys, linens and more.

Closet Organization, how to organize and edit your closet with blogger Erin Busbee, of Busbee Style

 Master Closet

In our master closet, which you can see in my videos above or below, I added a shelf / rack from Pottery Barn. It gives me extra hanging space. I’m using it kind of as a rotating closet. So I put clothes there that I know I’m going to feature in a video, or pieces I’m getting ready to pack for a trip.
I invested in some of the Container Store sweater bins, but you can use them for much more… depends on your needs.
For extras, or things you can’t hang up, like dresses that will lose their shape or one shoulder blouses, I’ve put them in under-bed bins to give me some more storage.
Make sure you watch my most recent closet editing and closet organizing videos for an update on how I’ve organized the closet!

Jewelry

In Texas, I loved to display my jewelry. That worked because I had the shelving and space for them. Here in Telluride, I don’t have that luxury so I found these expandable drawer organizers. I have one full of earrings and one for necklaces. I just put them in my bottom nightstand drawers and I’m loving the system so far.

Jeans

I fold and put my jeans into two large drawers. I organize them by color and type. So all of my cropped jeans are together, all of my black and gray are together, etc. Jeans are a huge part of my wardrobe. I wear them every day so it was important that they were accessible.

Desk Space

Underneath my desk, I used to have my printer just lying on the floor. I didn’t really like that so I bought two small white storage cubes and put them together. They work really well because they double as storage.

Kids’ Toys

The kids’ toys are always hard to organize. I really shopped around a lot for this and ended up buying stackable shelves and I think they work really well. I didn’t want to spend a ton on these because I knew they would wear and tear with the kids playing and being around them. The price was right, they were decent quality, and good looking. The ones I bought are sold out but here are some similar ones.

Linen Closet

Another closet that we’re using as a linen closet already had one large rack in it so I decided to order a second one for extra space. This one is super skinny and high. There’s a site called Shelving.com that lets you order shelves with specific length, width, and height so that was really nice.

Extra Closet

We have an extra closet a few feet away from the master so I decided to put most of my shoes in there. Instead of a shoe rack, I bought small shoe bins and tall shoe bins from the Container Store. I put my everyday shoes in the main closet and the rest of them in the extra closet. I think this keeps the closet cleaner and neater. I also put all of my blazers and spring jackets in this closet. On the top shelf, I got some nice linen handbag bins. I love that they are tiered so you can put the taller bags in the back and shorter in the front and still see them all.

  3. Hi Erin,

Great video. What space saving hangers do you use? I have been shopping around and not sure if the velvet hangers are good or would a plastic slim hanger with grippers work better. Just wondering what you have found works and is affordable.
    Thanks
    Lisa
