How To Apply Under Eye Concealer On Mature, Wrinkly Skin

How To Apply Under Eye Concealer On Mature Skin

I remember my first sign of crow’s feet around 30. I was freaking out at the time (let’s have a collective giggle)… but that was nothing compared to my 49-year old eyes. And, I know some of you may be reading this in your 50s or 60s and thinking… just wait! Dry skin, sun-damaged skin, lessened collagen production… Our skin cells just don’t do what they used to do! Even if we do everything we can like wearing sun protection, using retinoids, vitamin C’s, hyaluronic acid, trying every other active ingredient possible, chemical peels, and red-light therapy, we can’t avoid the aging process. And here at Busbee…we don’t want to! We believe in pro-aging and that the way our body and skin are changing is a natural part of life. But that doesn’t mean we’re not going to do what we can to look our best.

Another thing that we have to worry about as we age… the puffiness and dark circles under our eyes. We tend to look more tired, even when we are not. And how we apply makeup as we age…changes. I want to make sure we ALL get it right no matter what our age… and that’s why I’m bringing in the big guns for this post!! I’m NOT a makeup artist, but my sweet and gorgeous friend Lisa J of BK Beauty IS! I asked her to give us some of her best tips for applying concealer under mature eyes.

Are you excited???? You should be!! She’s amazing. Lisa even has her own line of incredible makeup brushes. You can look up Lisa on YouTube and find all of her amazing tips here. She just launched a new travel makeup case that’s so functional you should definitely check it out! It sold out super fast but they’re restocking soon!

Note: This post was originally published in 2020 but because we have a lot of new people on the site, we want to make sure we republish the best of the best so you don’t miss out on any of the amazing content we’ve had over the years!

5  Steps for Applying Under Eye Concealer for Women Over 40

#1 | Prep Your Under-Eye Area

Lisa’s first tip to helping you achieve the perfectly concealed eye… if you’re not already using moisturizer and eye cream, you should start. It’s the best way to prep your skin and eye area for the makeup you’re about to apply. Applying eye cream is the most important. The skin under our eyes is the thinnest layer of skin on the face, making it drier and more textured. The eye cream will help make it more supple and moisturized.

I love this eye serum by Colleen Rothschild. And, if you’re into skincare gadgets, I highly recommend the NuFace Fix anti-aging device. I reviewed the NuFace Fix in August 2019 with before and after photos – you can truly see a difference in toning and texture! It’s worth noting that the FIX is a temporary depuffing tool. It also minimizes facial wrinkles. The effect lasts for about a day. It’s great to use if you have something special that day like a wedding, reunion, or important meeting stepping off a flight. But if you’re looking for long-term effects, make sure you invest in skin care products that actually work. Topical retinoids are somewhat controversial but if you’ve discussed it with your doctor and feel comfortable using them, they are extremely helpful in slowing the aging process.

#2 | Select the Right Makeup Consistency for Your Skin Texture

Lisa says that since the eye area tends to have more wrinkles than the rest of the face, with thinner, more crepey skin, you should look for concealers that are quite light and hydrating. Remember the old super cakey Mac concealer palette we all used back in the day??? That isn’t going to work anymore. According to Lisa, if you have dry, textured under eyes, you’ll want a creamy concealer instead of a stick formula. Stick formulas tend to be drier, which magnifies the area it covers. The same goes for the rest of your face. A creamier consistency will mask any texture, fine lines, and wrinkles. Personally, I LOVE this Mac Prep + Prime Highlighter as my concealer. I wear the shade Radiant Rose I think it’s the best thing that I’ve found to cover up under eyes and those dark circles.

Lisa’s favorite is…  the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Away Concealer, which I’ve tried and love!

#3 | Matching Your Makeup Color

Now, let’s talk about color. This is SO hard, isn’t it? You have to find the exact right shade. Lisa says, if you have darker under eyes, choose a concealer with peach undertones. It will neutralize and cancel out the darkness. She opts for a concealer that is one shade lighter than her skin tone to create brighter under eyes.

#4 | How to Apply Your Under Eye Concealer

Okay, now here’s where you really need to pay attention. I wish I could just put Lisa in my pocket and she could pop out and do my makeup! Lisa says the best way to apply your concealer is by gently pressing the concealer under your eyes with your ring finger. You don’t want to pull at that delicate skin. She also recommends the BK Beauty 106 Brush, a great multitasking brush! When you apply the concealer remember that less is more. Apply it first in the inner corner… and then under the eye. Lastly, gently blend it out.

#5 | Add a Finishing Touch

Lastly, Lisa says that you should use a setting powder under your eyes, using a very light application. She says the powder should be sheer and translucent. It’s also best to find one with light reflective pigments that add radiance, to prevent a dry powdered look. Lisa recommends Laura Mercier’s Secret Brightening Powder, Koh Gen Do Natural Loose Powder, and the Hourglass Veil Loose Powder.
