5 HOME Trends To Embrace This Fall, And 5 To Trash…Pronto

Accessible Fall Home Trends

How do you feel about fall? Come August, my feelings present two different extremes! While the words “back to school” kind of give me the excitement on par with a deflated balloon…a bit of angst mixed with and skosh of anxiety, the words “fall trends” just light me up from within. Similar to fall fashion trends, there are exciting fall home trends to think about too. Trends are always subject to your personal taste and preference, and home décor is no different. Most importantly, your home should 100% be a reflection of you and your family. But I wanted to bring you up to speed on what top designers suggest for the upcoming fall season AND find a way to make those trends accessible and fun for you!

If your home is looking a bit dated and you want some easy ways to breathe new life into it, find some simple (and affordable!) tips in this post.

Team Texture IN, Lace OUT

Layer on the texture! If you have a smooth fabric chair or couch like velvet, leather or linen, mix in something chunky and bumpy like a knit throw or nubby pillow. Play with adding other tactile textures too (say that 3 times fast!) like rattan, cane, sisal and jute. What not to keep? Lace…lace doilies, curtains or tablecloths!

Lasting Vintage Style IN, Fast Furniture OUT

You may have noticed a shift in fashion to more sustainable, and less disposable pieces. Well, the same is trending for home décor. Investing in pieces that will stand the test of time, not just a season or 2, is making a comeback. This could mean repurposing your existing furniture pieces with a coat of paint or new hardware. OR you can find quality furniture pieces with a vintage or midcentury-modern nod like wooden accents, clean lines, and peg legs. Timeless is on trend!

Biophilic Design IN, Plastic Fruit OUT

What is Biophilic design you ask? Well, it's basically the idea of bringing the outdoors in. So, taking natural elements and integrating those into your home décor. This could be driftwood, bamboo, rattan, stone, fresh flowers, plants, fruits, and cut branches. You can also bring nature inside with colors like greens and blues. A visual connection with nature can be soothing and energizing at the same time!

Meditation Space IN, Word Art OUT

OK, I know the thought of having a "meditation space" might sound a bit daunting, but to make this accessible, just think about having a nook or corner that is quiet and thoughtful. Years ago, we may have gotten our inspiration from those dime-a-dozen, word art signs like "Live, Laugh, Love" and I have to admit for a stint, I was a bit overextended on wall art! But the new trend is comfy spaces with a cozy, yet minimal ambience. Chairs, floor pillows, poufs, soft lighting, maybe a yoga mat, or even just a relaxing candle are easy ways to create an intentionally mindful space.

Moody Colors IN, A Sea Of Grey OUT

I’m sure it’s no surprise that earthy colors are trending this fall. On one hand, there are vintage, 70’s vibe colors like bronze, bright mustard, and terra cotta. But other popular warm hues are more neutral like deep lush greens, beiges, taupe and black. If you jumped on the grey train like so many did, just mix that grey with some warm tones. Linking some fun pieces to bring those moody colors into your space.

  1. I ruthlessly threw away hundreds of books during moves over the past 15 years, since they took up space and everything was available on Kindle! Now, I miss the touch and feel and smell of them, and I am trying to reassemble my collection and I have even bought a new bookcase to house them. Which I am pretty sure is not trendy yet, maybe next year…

    1. I’ve had a difficult time parting with books over the years as I too love the touch and feel of them. Not sure I’ll ever get used to reading on e-readers. Good luck with building your collection, Andie! Best, Susan

  2. I love jute rugs…. I think because of the casual beachy vibe. Also love some of the moody colors that are in this year and glad to see gray fading away.

    1. I’m ready for some moody colors too, Julie! Thanks for your note and have a fabulous week! Best, Susan

  3. I have a beautiful glass jar filled with seashells my children collected over the years from the beaches where we live in SoCal. Every time I look at it, it makes me happy as I remember my now adult children growing up at the beach. I will never part with it.

    1. I love this so much, Elizabeth! What a beautiful memento. I can see why you’d never part with it. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful week, Susan
