Athleisure: 4 Ways to Wear the Trend with Neiman Marcus
True story.
I once was walking to work in Manhattan down 9th Avenue, and a man stopped me.
He said, “Honey, you can’t wear flip flops in Manhattan.”
I was so surprised, I couldn’t respond.
He waved his finger at me with a look of disgust on his face… and then walked away.
After that, I made it a rule to never wear sneakers or sandals east of 10th Avenue.
Now, I live in rural Texas. I’m a mom. I work from home. My life is vastly different.
How I dress has changed.
Even though I actually CAN wear sneakers now, and not get chastised, I have been very hesitant.
Even when the ‘athleisure’ trend really started taking off…
I had that man’s voice in my head. I saw his finger waving.
Well, in recent months, I’ve decided to get over it… and give in to what could be the greatest fashion trend of all time.
Athleisure is the perfect mix of fashion and function.
I know some of you may be struggling with this one as well,
So I teamed up with Neiman Marcus to show you FOUR WAYS to wear the trend.

Look #1 | Gym to Street
Style Tip: DO add a 3rd layer and elegant accessories
This is the most literal interpretation of “Athleisure,”
The concept of going directly from the gym to the street.
For example, you go to an exercise class, and then you have a bunch of errands to run.
Activewear
The FIRST step is to make sure you have super chic exercise gear. Of course!
These leggings fit really well.
They have this really interesting print that makes them look like moto jeans.
Check out the zippers…that’s part of the print!
The fading in the behind is strategic too and really makes it look more shapely.
This bra LIFTS up the girls for sure.
I would suggest sizing UP (runs small).
The sneakers, in contrast, run really large. Size down one full size.
Extra Layer
When you work out you generally wear a sports bra, tank top or tee.
Before you head out the door, add a stylish sweatshirt of jacket,
This will make you look more appropriate for running around.
And… help pull the street chic look together.
I love the open back of this sweatshirt which really shows off the straps on the sports bra.
It’s a little extra detail that looks quite stylish and sexy!
Add Accessories
Accessories are what will really elevate your look and make it look much more ‘street-chic.’
In my look above, I added a pop of color with a sophisticated bag and one piece of statement jewelry.
Finish it off with some sporty sunglasses, a bold lip, and voila… you are ready to run your errands!
By the way, if you are tall, you will love the strap length of this bag.
IF you are petite like me, you can knot the top to make it shorter.

Look #2 | Joggers & Slouchy Sweater
Style Tip: Try Joggers! Pair with unexpected things like luxury sweaters and/or elegant jackets.
You don’t have to literally wear exercise clothes to try the athleisure trend.
You can take a sporty piece, like jogging pants… and pair them with more mainstream things like I did above.
Joggers
I ordered these Norma Kamali joggers and they are now almost sold out in black.
(Fortunately, they also come in charcoal gray)
It is because they are insanely soft, comfortable, and so effortless!
For years, I have loved pairing wearing joggers with unexpected things like sweaters, jacket…or even pumps.
This sweater has a really fabulous lace-up detail in the back.
Lacing is another ‘athleisure’ inspired detail.
Color or Print Pop
You can easily add a color or print pop with your bag.
This velvet crossbody bag is one of my favorite finds of the season!
On Your Feet
You can try some comfy loafers like I’m wearing above.
(I live in these, by the way).
Or create more of a sexy look, by wearing pumps.

Look #4 | Jeans with Sneakers
Style Tip: Incorporate sporty details into your look like mesh, racing stripes or lacing
Athleisure can look very chic and sophisticated.
There are very subtle and simple ways to try the trend.
The look above is what I would call “athleisure light.”
It is one of the easiest options to pull off.
Lacing
This sweater vest, which is perfect for layering, has a standout lacing detail on the side.
Lacing is definitely rooted in activewear.
It’s a seemingly small detail, with big impact on the look.
The soft, white, button-down shirt with the popped collar also has a sporty/preppy vibe.
Sneakers
I love how these black and gold chic sneaks are very subtle, and keep the line long.
While I admire other women who wear white sneakers with black, I always feel shorter.
And, I’m already petite at 5’4″.
I’ve done it, but I prefer the monochromatic look above especially this time of the year.

Style Tip: Try chic sneakers with a dress. Add a jacket or blazer to pull it all together.
This is the hardest of all the athleisure looks to pull off.
But, I kind of love it!
Travel
