How To Wear Leggings Over 40 And Look Stylish!

Three Outfit Ideas

Wearing leggings over 40 can be difficult. Well, wearing leggings at any age can be a challenge. You may not want to show your bum. You want to look sophisticated and chic while remaining comfortable.

I wanted to share some simple guidelines to help you feel more confident rocking your leggings at ANY age!! It really comes down to hemlines and layering

Look #1 | With a Jacket

The leggings I’m wearing are by Spanx. I love all of the Spanx leggings because they really are the most forgiving. In terms of comfort, they aren’t as soft and lovely as the Essential Leggings I’ve highlighted by Jockey, but they provide intense tummy and leg control so everything stays where you want it too. I also own the faux leather leggings by Spanx.

With the leggings, I’m wearing a long chambray shirt by Bella Dahl. Their shirts are RIDICULOUSLY SOFT and comfy!! You will never want to take it off!! This exact shirt is sold out, but I linked similar ones. Over the shirt, I’m wearing a chic green jacket by Marissa Webb. I like the utilitarian look of the jacket, and I love the color!

I shared these gorgeous snakeskin embossed boots in my best shoes of 2018 video. They are by Schutz. I love that they’re a stiletto heel so they can really dress up a look. They’re just so chic, sexy and comfortable for heels.

Look #2 | With A Sweater

This is the perfect look for you busy moms out there! It’s casual, effortless, and you still look put together. Throw on this sweater by Sanctuary or any sweater you love that’s long enough. If you’re headed out the door, add a cute puffer coat and pom hat. I wanted to highlight these snow boots. They’re by Sigerson Morrison and so comfortable! I think the suede and shearling combo is really pretty. They’re almost sold out so I linked similar options. There are some great dupes for these! If you are in a warmer climate, swap the snow boots for some peep-toe booties like these and lose the puffer and hat.

Look #3 | With A Cardigan

I love how this look is the most covered up and yet the sexiest! Leggings can be sexy!! The easiest way to create a layered look is to grab a 2-in-1 like this cute two-in-one layered sweater. Over the sweater, I put on a Leith cardigan which is now sold out, but here is a similar option by Barefoot Dreams.  For those of you in a warmer climate, take a look at this short sleeve, lightweight cardigan! It’s the perfect layer for this transitional time that you can keep cool wearing.

These Sam Edelman over-the-knee boots are comfortable, sleek… and they stay up! I wouldn’t suggest getting them if you have bigger calves because they are VERY narrow. If you have narrow calves, these are perfect for YOU.

Bonus Look

I shared this look a while back. I’m wearing the faux leather Spanx leggings I mentioned earlier, a 2-in-1 sweater, and short sleeve Barefoot Dreams cardigan. I topped it off with brown boots and a Rag & Bone hat. You could wear this look to run errands, pick up kiddos from school, etc. I really love this look. It’s super cool and modern without looking like you are trying too hard.

Tips For Wearing Leggings Over 40

  • If you’re worried about showing your bum, make sure you wear something long enough to cover it
  • Be aware of volume control. When you wear something SO fitted on the bottom, you should aim to wear a looser fitting top or sweater
  • Avoid tight-fitting tops over your tight-fitting leggings
  • Once you find a brand of leggings you love, buy multiple pairs! I love the Spanx leggings and have several options.
