Good American Coated Jeans
If leather pants are a little out of your comfort zone, try starting out with leather or coated leather jeans instead! You might remember these cool coated jeans by Good American from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. They’re super flattering, stretchy, and comfortable. The look of the coated leather is so chic and sophisticated, and the fit is amazing. They have a high rise and on-trend straight-leg silhouette (that’s easier to style than you think!). I’m wearing them with a cool chain-detail camisole, leather blazer, and booties. I’d wear this look to dinner, but you could easily dress it down for errands or carpool by wearing a tee and sneakers. Quick sizing note on the jeans…they run very small. I would suggest getting 1-2 sizes up from your normal size.

Commando Vegan Leather Pants
Believe me, I’ve tried a lot of leather, faux leather, and vegan leather pants… And THESE are my new favorites. They add impact and make a statement, but they’re effortless at the same time. That’s not an easy combo to find! They feel good on the skin and are more breathable than any other leather garment I’ve EVER put on. And somehow, they are stretchy! I know… it’s a mystery to me too. Not sure what kind of magic is weaved into the fabric! AND, the paper bag waist is super flattering.
Style Tip: I like to tie the waist belt off to the side–it looks more elegant and won’t draw the eye right to the middle of the tummy.
I paired these pants with a basic white button-down shirt and some stunning Isabel Marant black ankle boots. Wow. When I saw these boots, I knew I had to have them! This exact pair is sold out and from last year so I linked another version. But, you could easily wear any heeled black booties or flats you already have in your closet. You could also swap out the shirt for a t-shirt or sweater.
How To Wear Leather Pants Over 40
- Don’t Size Up – So there may be a temptation to size up, but don’t! The leather stretches. You want them to fit like a second skin.
- Keep It Simple – Leather pants are a standout piece so keeping the rest of your look simple and classic is key.
- Accessories/Shoes – Shoe choice is important. To keep a long, lean line, wear shoes that are the same color as your pants. You’ll also want to keep any other accessories, like jewelry, very simple.
- One Trend Rule – Sometimes you might wonder, “Does this make me look like I’m trying too hard?” If you are feeling that way, rock your leather pants and keep everything else, very minimal and classic. Don’t add other trends to your look and I promise you’ll feel better. I call it the one trend rule which is great to pull out anytime you’re in doubt.

Hello Erin
I do have more than 1 pair of leather pants (all straight leg ) and older than 60 years old. Question for you as I have had opposite answers and I am curious what your advice would be: Is it ok to wear leather pants with same colour moto jacket and boots or it’s too much leather? Thanks I’m advance for your answer!
Great question, Danielle! If you love the look of leather on leather…wear it! You should always wear what makes you feel most confident! In the first look, I’m wearing a leather blazer with leather pants, but I added a silk top underneath… that contrasting texture adds visual interest and depth to the look. If you want to wear your leather jacket moto jacket with your leather pants, just make sure that your top is a different texture. Whether that’s a silky tank, fuzzy sweater, or crisp cotton button-down. Hope that helps and thanks so much for being here! ~Erin xo
Excellent advice, thanks Erin! Simple with leather is best. I’ve dressed mine down with simple t shirt and flats, or a small heel and simple sweater or button down shirt. I find both my black leather pants and taupe color very wearable and versatile and looks elevated but not overdone. monochromatic color theme also works very well for me.
Lovely suggestions, Savi, thanks for sharing! ~Erin xo
Yay!!!
Glad you liked this one, Teri! ~Erin xo
I love wearing leather pants! I have a black pair and a brown pair (and a black leather sleeveless tank and a pair of chestnut colored suede pants and a black leather moto jacket)! I love them all, and I feel they are so sophisticated. I totally agree that keeping every other part of the total outfit classic is key and matching the color of the pant with the bootie/boot/shoe. I especially enjoy wearing my leather pants (or leather top or suede pants) when the weather is cold because they keep me warm AND stylish. BTW, I’m 61 YOA.
It sounds like you have a gorgeous collection, Kristin. I’m glad you liked this one! ~Erin xo

I say Yay! I’m 57 and rock them, I get so many compliments when I wear them. I say Go For It Ladies!!! ?
Beautiful outfit Erin – thanks for the inspiration, i have a similar pair and was hesitant to wear, i’m well over 50, but I wore them toned down and simple with a crew neck silk top & pearls…. i felt great and got compliments. Now I find them comfortable and easy to wear, as long as I keep them simple…I’ve worn with a t shirt and nice tennis shoes and it works well also. Happy vacation to you!
Those are great styling ideas, Savi! Thanks for sharing! ~Team Busbee
I love my black leather pants, my caramel colored suede pants and my black leather sleeveless tank, and I’m way over 40. I don’t wear these items together, and when I wear each of these garments, I pair it with simple garments and minimal accessories.
