7 Tips to Help You Find a New Signature Scent

If you’ve ever wandered into a major department store and walked through the cosmetics, you’ve probably been asked to try a scent. And, most likely you didn’t buy it because a perfume feels personal. It’s not an impulse purchase like a new lipstick or nail color. A perfume carries more purpose. How we smell affects a lot of things from how we feel… to our memories… to who we attract.

Bloomingdales recently reached out and asked me if I wanted to try the new Cartier Carat Eau de Perfum, and after smelling it… I jumped at the chance! Keep scrolling to read my tips for finding your signature scent and more about this beautiful perfume!

#1 | Mix Things Up!

My first tip to help you find your signature scent is to mix things up. What do I mean by that? Well, IF are you like me, and you have been wearing the same scent for two decades… it might be time to try something new! 😉 In every other way in my life, I take risks and try new things. Why wouldn’t I try a new scent??

#2 | Think About What You Like

A great place to start is to think about your personal style. (See…it all comes back to style!) Are you a girly girl and love all things floral and lace, perhaps you pick out a floral scent. If you are playful; something fruity. Bold ladies might want to opt for a bolder fragrance, maybe with sandalwood. And fashion risk takers might consider stronger scents with saffron or incense.

Here is how the Cartier’s perfumer describes Carat:

“I wanted to create a fragrance that shimmers with all the fire of a diamond. And so, I chose seven beautiful fresh flowers that come together to form a new flower, abstract but alive, like the light of the diamond.”

I shot these pictures by one of my favorite spots in Mountain Village, Elk Pond… because it reminds me of Carat. It’s beautiful, natural and a little wild.

#3 | Strength Matters

You can often save money if you buy an eau de toilette versus an eau de parfum. The advantage of an eau de parfum, which is more concentrated, the scent should last all day! In contrast, if you want a lighter scent…go with an eau de toilette.

#4 | Direct Contact

If you go to the beauty county at Bloomingdales, make sure you put the sample directly on your skin. It will likely smell differently on you than it does on the card, or your friend.

#5 | We All Smell Differently

We all have a friend who smells great ALL the time. And, you may be tempted to run out and buy the same fragrance. Just remember that we all smell differently, and therefore perfumes smell differently on us. Make sure you try it on first…

#6 | Only Smell a Couple of Samples at a Time

Only smell a couple of fragrances per visit. After the second or third scent, you are likely to be more desensitized. Plus, you don’t want scent overload!  And, after you find a scent you love, give yourself a full day wearing it, to make sure you really love the fragrance, before you buy it.

#7 | Get the Sample Size

Another tip to finding your signature scent: get the sample size before committing the larger bottle. Maybe one day you love the scent, but that doesn’t guarantee you’ll love it in a week. I bought the 1.6 oz. size of Carat versus the 3.3 oz. I can always go back and buy the bigger size.

  1. Hi Beautiful Girl…First of all you lool so young and pretty in that dress. I love the fall look, and finally feeling some fall in our part of WV.
My mom wore Nina Ricci’s Laairde temps. I think my sister does not even have to put it on anymore…she always smells so good with that scent. I too, love it , but I like to mix it up a bit, but always have it as my stand by. I did order a sampler from France that one of tne utubers talked aboutby Sylvaine Delacourt Paris France. They are perfumes. I ended up liking Helicriss the same one as the utuber. Thers were ten scents. I did not care much about the vanilla ones. Vanilla gives me headaches. I am not sure I will buy the Helicriss..kind of expensive. My husband said it smells like a man’s cologne. It is a unisex petfume. One of my customers said is my hair color different..it smells so good. I said “No, it is me.” Lol. I will have to see if I can smell Carat..Macy’s??? I totally agree though, perfume on you may smell great on you , and terrible on me. Thanks, erin. Hope your fall is the best ever🍁🍂🍃🌻❤
