How to Combine Black and Brown for a Chic Fashionable Outfit
Can I wear black and brown together? I get this question ALL the time! I totally get that it’s unusual and somewhat tricky, so I want to give you my fail-safe formula for success when wearing a unique color combination like brown and black or navy and black.
I have one key tip on how to style black and brown together…
Before I dive in, wanted to share an AWESOME SALE. Starting September 28th – October 1st, Bloomingdale’s is having their Buy More, Save More Event! Get $25 of when you spend $150, $50 off $250, $100 off $400, and $200 off $700+

Wear an Anchor Piece in Your Black & Brown Outfit
To seamlessly wear brown and black or any unusual color combination, all you need to tie it together is… an anchor piece. So, what is an anchor piece? It’s an accessory or piece of clothing that incorporates BOTH colors, tieing color combinations like brown and black together. It makes your outfit and color choice look deliberate, more cohesive and next level.
I wanted to show you a couple of different anchor piece options to give you some ideas.
LOOK #1 | Anchor Piece: Leopard Print Pumps
In this look, leopard print pumps are my anchor piece. I wanted to show you this one first as it is very simple to recreate when you want to wear black and brown together! I would wear this look to dinner with friends or with your partner/spouse. To make this look more office-friendly, swap the jeans for black tapered ankle pants. If you don’t wear heels, try the outfit with leopard-print flats instead!
BTW, I’m not sure if you recognize these shoes. I’ve had them for years and they are still going strong. These leopard print pumps by Sam Edelman will add a perfect pop to any look…
It’s not too often you see a leather blazer. And, the color… isn’t it gorgeous!? The leather blazer is by Kobi Halperin (Bloomingdale’s). As you know, I’ve been incorporating more brown tones into my wardrobe. So I was very excited to find this blazer. I am eager to find different ways to wear it.

I wanted you all to see the lightweight sweater I’m wearing under the leather blazer too. It’s a black cashmere sweater by AQUA. AQUA is one of my go-to brands at Bloomingdale’s. They make amazing, high-quality cashmere sweaters at very affordable prices. This sweater has a cool puff sleeve detail and will no doubt be a heavy hitter this year!
I LOVE this camo cashmere sweater. You’ll want to scoop this one up early in the season. It sells out every year.
LOOK #2 | Anchor Piece: Leopard Print Scarf
The second simple way to tie brown and black together… wear a scarf! In this case (above) I’m wearing a GORGEOUS leopard print, cashmere scarf as my anchor piece. Leopard print is a HUGE trend for fall and I do not expect it to go anywhere anytime soon. Wear this outfit to work, dinner, or switch out the shoes to run errands!
This is a next-level scarf! Made out of 100% cashmere, you’ll pull this out again and again and again all fall and winter seasons… for years to come. It’s worth EVERY penny, but I linked a more budget-friendly option as well. For more ways to wear a scarf, make sure you watch this video. On my feet, some classic and sexy black pumps by Jimmy Choo. Annnndd, let’s talk about these J.Brand Jeans for a moment. They’re a flattering and versatile dark gray/black wash. I love the frayed hem, super high rise (10.75”), and subtle distressing! The rise goes above my belly button. I’m 5’4″ and the length fits me perfectly.
