40+ Fashions – How To Wear a Wrap Dress

Oh, the wrap dress. One of my all-time faves!

There is a reason this piece has been popular since the 70’s (thank you Diane Von Furstenberg). It is lovely, figure-flattering, and incredibly versatile. You can wear a wrap dress to the office, dinner, a party, running errands, etc. If you don’t already own one and you are 40+ consider this a must-have!

STYLING NOTES:

BUST: I just had a fitting yesterday for a TV shoot. I put a wrap dress on one of my models…friend and fellow YouTuber, Marnie Goldberg – @MsGoldGirl. Seeing the wrap on her reminded me that IF you actually have a chest (I do not), wrap dresses can be tricky. To downplay the bust, simply add a very simple, low cut cami that goes straight across. This can act as a modesty panel and cover up some of the cleavage, without compromising the look of the dress. If you can get away with no cami, I would go that route. You can also take your wrap dress to the tailor and ask him/her to put a snap at the top so you are able to snap the bust closed.

BODY TYPE: This dress will look fabulous on pretty much every body type. The things to consider are 1) Bust coverage (add cami if needed) and length (some of these can be quite short). Make sure it’s an appropriate length. My dress is slightly shorter than knee length (about three inches above), but the 3/4 sleeves keep it more conservative and office appropriate.

SHOES: If you wear a printed wrap dress like I’m wearing, nude or skin-colored shoes are a no-brainer. You can also try another neutral like a metallic. When you wear something this bold, you want to keep everything else pretty simple. I chose patent, nude pumps which dresses up the look. If you want something a bit more casual, switch the pumps for wedges or even flats.

ACCESSORIES: I really love the plunging v-neck on the wrap and don’t think you need a necklace. Try earrings and bracelets instead! Again, your dress is a standout so you don’t need much in the way of accessories.
