Fall/Winter Capsule Wardrobe Basics
If you are a newsletter subscriber, you know that we have EPIC capsule wardrobe graphics seasonally. These handouts (that you can download and print) are so helpful visually when it comes to putting together the perfect capsule wardrobe where everything works seamlessly together.
What Is A Capsule Wardrobe
For those of you who don’t know what a capsule wardrobe is…it’s basically a collection of essential items that seamlessly integrate together. That means that you can mix and match and wear all of these pieces in a bunch of different ways. There’s a reason this graphic takes me 10+ hours to put together… I choose each piece very carefully, weighing fit and versatility as well as quality. You want to spend the majority of your wardrobe budget on basics…80% on basics and 20% on trends. You can find more helpful style tips here. Additionally, I’m thinking about sleeves, hemlines, and all of the things that help women feel more confident.
Shop The Capsule Wardrobe!
I tried to include pieces that are versatile so that you can wear them over and over again. This wardrobe is for winter but some of these pieces are such great basics that they could easily transition to spring and beyond! Find all of the links to the items in this capsule collection below…
When you’re building a capsule wardrobe, the first thing you should consider is color or what color story you want. Neutral colors like black, white, brown, gray, navy, etc. will be the most versatile for your classic pieces. But you can also add your favorite colors to show off your personal style. For example, I included pops of one of the trendiest winter colors…red!
Next, you should consider fit, quality, and details. I know that decision fatigue can kick in and it’s easy to settle on a piece of clothing that doesn’t really fit or flatter your body. Make sure you stay patient and take the time to find that perfect white button-down that fits your bust or those perfect ankle boots that don’t rub or give you blisters. Everything from your tops and sweaters to shoes and accessories should also be high quality. When you purchase higher-quality pieces, they’ll last longer and actually save you money in the long run! Finally, look for special details that really show off your style. Don’t just look for a basic long-sleeved tee, consider a tee with long sleeves that also have some ruching or puffed details to make it feel even more special.
After you’ve created a capsule wardrobe that you LOVE, everything you put on should feel like your favorite piece of clothing.

I’ve been working on a capsule wardrobe for an upcoming month-long trip to London. While I love neutrals, I would get bored with a wardrobe that hasnt any pops of color, so I decided on lavender and Hunter green to go with my black, grey, and cream neutrals. I was surprised at how well lavender works as a winter color ( evoking snowy winter sunsets). In any case, I was delighted to see your capsule populated with red & purple. And, I’m using yours as a check against my own. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughtful collection. I’m curious as to whether you and your team have discovered how many different looks you can get out of this capsule? And, I think my favorite piece is that simkhai sweater; it’s a shame it doesn’t come in larger sizes as they surely would have sold one to me if they did. That sweater would look great on a wide variety of body shapes. Thanks again!
What an exciting trip to plan for, Renee! You’re on the right track – starting with your color story is always Step #1 for packing. Especially for the longer trips! It’s so important to add your favorite colors to show off your personal style and to help your capsule feel special. I’m glad this capsule was helpful to draw inspiration as well. We have made Look Books with our capsules in the past and typically come up with around 30 unique outfits, though it can really be more! It’s important to make sure the pieces all pair with each other seamlessly. The Simkhai sweater is such a lovely piece… It’s available here, just not in the camel color, up to a size XL. https://rstyle.me/+NpQrfYIDQVOEScja17cdhA
Have the BEST time in London!! ~Erin xo
I’m like this capsule. I can see adapting it for my wardrobe. I would probably substitute in a few navy pieces which would coordinate with the burgundy/maroon, and replace a sweater with a brown cashmere one. Also would put in some dark green. I enjoy wearing dark green in winter. I can see several of the tops going with a pair of dark brown Paige jeans I just got. Plus could substitute an ecru color for the white tops. I can tell this capsule was highly thought out, many of the pieces could go from work to night out, even to an event like the symphony. I pinned it!
I’m so glad you found this capsule helpful for you, Susan! Everything you’ve shared is exactly our hope here… that you can adjust the colors and styles to fit YOU and your own style preferences best. We absolutely love hearing about how you are switching things up to work for you! ~Team Busbee
