10 Men’s Wardrobe Must-Haves for Fall

I can only speak from my experience, my observation with male clients, and the men in my life…
They want to look good without looking like they are trying too hard, OR actually trying too hard.

The wardrobe has to be simple and functional first… stylish is a bonus.
So…if your guy is having some trouble getting dressed, chances are high that he is lacking wardrobe basics.
These foundation pieces make your wardrobe work.

You can also think of your wardrobe basics like a mini capsule wardrobe. All the pieces interchange and work well together.

I teamed up with Nordstrom to bring you my top ten picks for men’s fall wardrobe basics:

Shop the Post

 #1 |  Jacket

A pullover or lightweight jacket is an essential piece in a man’s fall wardrobe.
It will not only keep him warm, it layers beautifully under coats.
I see this for dinners out during the week or weekend activities like apple picking or kids’ games.

I really like the zip detail on this pullover by Ted Baker.
Please note this is a slim fit.

 #2 | Classic Jeans

Every man needs a great pair of jeans!
But, again, they typically want comfort too!  Enter these traditional relaxed fit jeans by 7 For All Mankind!
They are mid-rise, and are looser through the leg and bottom for more comfort.

#3 |  Long Sleeve Tee

A long sleeve tee is a wardrobe basic for both men and women.
This tee (above) is a heavyweight, 100% cotton shirt so it will be very warm, comfortable and not see through.
It’s the perfect casual piece to throw on with jeans and be out the door in no time.
It also comes in several colors like blue, gray, white and plum.

 #4 | Sport Coat

A sport coat is a must for those evenings or days when you have something kinda dressy, but not enough for a full on suit or tie.
I LOVE the way a man looks in a white button down shirt and an elegant sport coat.
This blue plaid sport coat is an interesting alternative to the typical gray, black and brown sport coats.

#5 | Button Down Shirt

You gotta have at least one standout, button-down shirt.
Gingham is one option. This shirt is also 100% cotton so it’s very breathable and comfortable.
Peter Millar makes high quality, good looking men’s shirts.
If they aren’t in your budget, try the Nordstrom brand here.

#6 | Puffer Jacket

Quilted puffer jackets are not only on trend, they are a must to keep you warm.
This quilted jacket is wind and water resistant. It is also ideal for traveling since it packs tightly into a neck pillow!
It comes in more traditional colors too, like black and navy!

#7 | Non-Iron Shirt

In addition to the one standout button down, every man also needs a non-iron shirt.
This is the one he doesn’t have to worry about and can always pull out of the closet in a pinch.

I really like the shirt (above) because of the rich fall colors and subtle checked pattern.

#8 | Classic Trousers

Classic trousers are a must for those dinner parties and fancy date nights this fall.
These trousers have a flattering, subtle pinstripe detail, and come in navy and black!

#9 | Cashmere Sweater

This kind of goes for everyone… at least one cashmere sweater is a must!
This Vince Camuto, v-neck, cashmere sweater (above) is perfect for layering with all of his other fall pieces.

#10 | Raincoat

This versatile and great looking raincoat by Ted Baker is a little pricey, but worth the investment!
You can zip in (and out) the quilted vest, which can be worn on its own.
The longer length and hood will keep him dry and warm on those rainy days.
(Runs small, order one size up)

Here is another awesome option by Barbour for less.
And, here is a dressy rain coat option by London Fog.
