Depending on where you live, a puffer jacket or coat is one of the outerwear must-haves during the winter. Black will be the most versatile. But if you have that covered, it’s fun to switch it up a bit. Even though it’s only October…those freezing temps will be here before you know it. So I’m sharing 12 amazing puffer jacket options to add to your wardrobe… Including classic black puffers and some fun, stylish, on-trend options too!
By the way, if you’re planning a ski trip this year, make sure you check out this post with everything you need to look like a (stylish) pro on the slopes!
What Is A Puffer Jacket?
A puffer jacket, also called a puffer coat or quilted jacket, is a type of outerwear known for its signature quilted design, complete with sections in between the stitching that are filled with various types of insulation to provide warmth without extra weight. Puffer jackets are not only great for staying warm, as many also offer weather resistance thanks to water resistant or waterproof material, making them ideal for winter adventures on the coldest winter days.
Best Puffer Jackets for Women
There are so many different types of puffer jackets and, depending on your climate, it can be hard to determine what kind of puffer jacket or coat you really need. For example, if you live somewhere with below-zero temps, you probably need a coat that provides extra warmth to combat that cold weather, whereas if you live somewhere freezing and rainy, you’ll want to make sure you get a puffer with wind and water-repellent material. For those of you who live in warmer climates like Texas, you probably don’t need a heavy-duty insulated jacket. If you’re looking for super high-quality puffers, my go-to brands include Herno, SAM., Mackage, Parajumpers, Perfect Moment, North Face, and Canada Goose. If you don’t need a super warm puffer jacket, I recommend checking out Nordstrom, Revolve, and Shopbop for great fashion-forward and affordable options.
Puffer Jackets For Women
1. SAM. Soho Belted Down Mid-Length Puffer Jacket
The Belted Down Mid-Length Puffer Jacket from SAM. just might be the warmest jacket on our list. It features a 100% nylon shell with super warm 90% duck down and 10% feathers filling. Plus, it’s a mid-length coat, which means depending on your height, it’ll hit about mid-thigh. You’ll also love the removable hood, flap and zip pockets, thumbhole cuffs and, of course, the adjustable snap buckle waist that creates a more defined silhouette, even when you’re all bundled up.
2. SAM. Freestyle Down Puffer Jacket
Another best-seller from SAM., the Freestyle Down Puffer Jacket has a more relaxed fit than the one above, and features a cozy stand collar rather than a removable hood. This jacket is arguably one of the chicest ways to protect yourself from wind and rain, and the down/feathers fill will certainly keep you warm. Plus, with six colors to choose from, you can bet it’ll fit right in with your winter wardrobe.
3. Herno Dora Puffer Jacket
With a look that screams straight from the runway, the Dora Puffer Jacket from Herno is another one of my favorites for the season. Featuring a high neck, the Dora Puffer Jacket is made from a high-quality cotton blend and insulated with feather down. This jacket is a great option for anyone who prefers more coverage, as it will definitely cover your backside, with a fit that works perfectly whether you’re running errands or going out for drinks.
4. Parajumpers Panda Jacket
Parajumpers is another one of my go-to brands for high-quality puffer jackets, but it’s one that is often left out of conversations about chic winter wear. You’ll be just as curious as I am as to why that is, once you try on their Panda Jacket. Made from heavyweight fabric and featuring all the must-haves for a good puffer, you can bet the testing process was rigorous for this quilted coat. Both the hood and waist have a drawstring to ensure a perfect fit every time, and it’s filled with 100% duck down that is shockingly warm for being so lightweight.
5. Perfect Moment Houndstooth Polar Flare Down Jacket
The Houndstooth Polar Flare Down Jacket from Perfect Moment is easily one of the chicest puffer jackets I’ve seen to date. Perfect Moment’s Polar Flare Ski Jacket is one of their best-selling coats, and now it’s available in an amazing houndstooth print. Not only am I obsessed with the print, I also can’t stop gawking at the features of this jacket, which include water-resistant fabric, 700-fill-power insulation, and all your must-haves for a warm day on the slopes, like a lined hood, lined pockets, and an external pocket for your ski pass Just be aware that this jacket is intentionally cropped and fitted.
6. French Connection Faux Leather Puffer Jacket
Faux leather is always in style, so as soon as I saw the Faux Leather Puffer Jacket from French Connection, I knew I had to include it here, especially right now while it’s marked down to under $100! The dark chocolate faux leather of this puffer jacket makes it the perfect top layer for a stylish winter outfit.
7. Canada Goose Cypress Jacket
Canada Goose is known for their high-quality, super warm outerwear, but their Cypress Jacket is one of my favorites for days when you prefer a lighter, less warm puffer. But don’t let that fool you into thinking it can’t hold up to the harshest elements, because the “Recycled Feather-Light Ripstop Shiny fabric” can protect you from harsh winds as well as light rain and snow. Best of all, it packs into itself so it’s great for travel.
8. AQUA Puffer Jacket
This puffer jacket from AQUA is another stylish option for occasions when you want to stay warm, but still look super cute and trendy. It features a stand collar and thumbhole cuffs, as well as front pockets and a drawcord hem to keep you protected from the elements. It’s exclusive to Bloomingdale’s but it’s currently marked down so you might want to act quick on this one before they’re sold out!
9. SAM. Vegan Leather Isabel Jacket
There’s so much to love about this puffer jacket, beginning with the fact that it’s yet another fantastic vegan leather option, this time from SAM. It’s a lighter brown color that reminds me of camel coats that are super on trend. I also love that it has a stow-away hood, giving you more styling options. Additional features include a drawstring hem and recessed knit cuffs with cozy thumbholes.
10. Mackage Freya Hooded Down Puffer Jacket
Although certainly a splurge, the Freya Hooded Down Puffer Jacket from Mackage is, in my opinion, worth every penny. It’s a prime example of luxury outerwear, and is easily one of the most elegant puffer coats I’ve seen. I love that you can cinch the waist with a drawcord to create a more feminine silhouette, as well as the shell that looks like velvet yet resists and repels water. It also offers 800 fill power to keep you warm in super lower temperatures.
11. SAM. Sawyer Jacket
One more premium puffer from SAM., the Sawyer Jacket deserves all the attention it gets. It’s constructed from high-quality materials, like dyed Italian lamb shearling, leather, and goose down/feathers. The glossy hood and zip cuffs give it a bit of personality that I love in statement pieces, while the overall design ensures you’ll stay warm and dry every time you put it on.
12. Mango Hood Quilted Coat
Last, but certainly not least, is the Hood Quilted Coat from Mango. This coat caught my eye because it offers a modern twist on the classic puffer coat. For a nylon coat, it’s super chic looking, partly due to its oversized, relaxed fit. It still does a pretty good job at protecting you from the elements too, thanks to its turtleneck and roomy hood, just be aware that it features a button closure rather than the more common zip-front.
How To Style Puffer Jackets
Pair with feminine pieces.
A flowing skirt or dress might not be your first pick when the weather outside is frightful, but pairing a bulky coat with a feminine bottom is a great way to show off your personal style while wearing a puffer jacket. Plus, it’ll add shape to the lower half of your body to make up for the lack of shape up top. Add a sleek pair of boots and you’re ready to go!
Go all-in with the relaxed, casual vibe.
Sometimes the easiest way to style an oversized, relaxed-fit piece is to just go all-in. By that, I mean that since a lot of puffer coats lack any real shape and tend to hang loosely on the body, pair them with other pieces that do the same. Think wide-leg pants, straight-leg trousers, boyfriend jeans, etc., and then, of course, footwear that fits that same vibe, such as sneakers or lug-sole boots.
Puffer Jacket Outfit Ideas
- Maxi dress with a long puffer coat and knee-high boots
- Monochromatic outfit ft. coordinating jacket and pieces underneath
- Patterned puffer with sleek black pants
- Crop top or baby tee underneath a classic-fit puffer
- Puffer jacket, athletic tee, cargo pants or athletic pants, and sneakers
- Black puffer, white sweater, black mini skirt, black knee-high boots

Northern Wisconsin. Oh, yeah. I need a puffer here! ?
I bet! Hopefully one of these will work…Stay warm! ~Erin xo
I’m short, so I need a cost that doesn’t make me look boxy. One’s with belt’s or off center zipper’s. Great ideas. But you always have such great fashion taste????????????????
Try a wrap coat… that will not make you look boxy. Or a lightweight puffer.
Puffer coats always made me feel bigger and unwieldy. However, you showed a couple here that are cute and slimmer! Thank you!
