80’s Metallic Trend: It’s Back and Better Than Ever! Here’s How To Nail It!

Metallic Trend

The metallic trend was super hot in the fashion world in the 80’s and while metallics never really went away, they are crazy popular again as a major trend for 2024. Does anyone else remember Margo and Tom’s silver sweatsuits in the movie Christmas Vacation?  ? Ya, not like that! Today’s metallics are sexy and sophisticated, edgy and cool. We wanted to share a few metallic pieces that are all super wearable, to celebrate the various ways we’re embracing metallics this season. These metallic clothes and accessories are great for adding that little extra sparkle and shine to your holiday outfits and New Year’s Eve looks! But you’ll also wear these finds year-round. Not only that but in the spirit of this For Less Friday post, we searched for and found affordable and high-quality metallics.

Metallic Clothing & Accessories

From tops and sweaters to jewelry and handbags, keep scrolling for 10 more metallic pieces that you can confidently wear now during the holiday season and well into the new year.

Metallic Slingback Pumps

Metallic Slingback Pumps

Let’s kick things off with these gorgeous Franco Sorto slingback metallic pumps. They have a cushioned footbed which really helps with the comfort factor, and an on-trend flared heel. If you want to dress up a pair of jeans and a sweater like Erin did, it’s one easy way to pack a little extra excitement into your look. We love the gold metallic shine, and they also come in a cool red metallic color called Mars. If you have trouble with slingback straps slipping odd your heels, these have some elastic on the straps so you get a secure fit.

Metallic Loafers

Want to make a fashion statement whether you’re wearing a well-tailored suit or a casual pair of jeans?  Slip on the Hardi Loafers from Dolce Vita. With a low heel and high shine, this is a fabulous way to lean into this trend.

Micro-Sequin Dresses

To achieve the high-shine look we’re seeing on all the red carpets this year, reach for a micro-sequin dress. It creates a liquid metal finish that turns heads everywhere you go.

Coated Denim

Why settle for boring blue jeans when you can rock metallic coated denim? GAP’s best-selling Metallic ’90s Loose Jeans are sold out, but you can find similar options at Abercrombie and Revolve.

Metallic Outerwear

Gone are the days we settle for standard black outerwear. This winter, we’re thrilled to see metallic fabrics taking over the outerwear section. Unfortunately, the metallic puffer vest that first caught my eye at Anthropologie is sold out, and this metallic silver stunner from Marc Jacobs is nearly gone, but I searched high and low for similar options and, let me tell you, these alternatives don’t disappoint. First, this affordable option from Amazon, or there’s this puffer vest at Nordstrom Rack, available in three colors.

Shiny Statement Top

Dare to go bold with your next outfit by swapping your go-to top for one that will really make a statement. A metallic top, like the Porridge Shine Glam Tee, will do just that. And it’s surprisingly versatile too. Mix and match it with various bottoms to create a look that will really stand out.

Textured Accessories

Perhaps the easiest way to incorporate metallics into your wardrobe is with accessories. Metallic accessories, like these Tassel Drop Earrings for example, are just as chic as they are fun, and they’re a fabulous way to instantly elevate any outfit.

Subtle Mesh Layer

For a subtle and sophisticated touch of glamour, add a subtle mesh layer to your outfit. Think something like this metallic wrap scarf from Adrianna Papell worn over a dress or an oversized top. Play around with proportions and choose whatever footwear matches your vibe, whether it’s sneakers or sky-high pumps.

Metallic Bags And Purses

You can even add a touch of metallic to your handbag. Take the Joy Metallic Faux Leather Shoulder Bag from JW PEI, for example. The metallic exterior and 90s silhouette leans fully into the metallic fashion trend, making it an essential piece that effortlessly transitions from day to night.

Glistening Accents

Finally, for a subtle way to add metallics to your outfit, no matter what clothing you have on, paint your nails in metallic polish. Metallic polish adds a touch of glitz and glamour that will make you feel like a goddess or a rockstar, depending on which metal finish you select. Some options to consider include Boy De Chanel in black or anything from the OPI Metallic Mega Mix Nail Lacquer Collection.

What is the Metallic Fashion Trend?

The metallic fashion trend is a way to add a touch of shine to your outfit. From a bold statement piece to shiny accents, most metallics make use of silver or gold, as well shiny pastels and glistening jewel tones.

How to Wear the Metallic Trend

Swap Neutrals for Metallics

To wear metallics, think of them as an elevated neutral. Any neutral piece, be it a top, pants, or an accessory, can be replaced with a metallic alternative. The surprising versatility of metallics allows them to be worn with practically any color.

Don’t Be Afraid To Be Bold

The metallic trend is all about making a statement, so what better way to embrace it than with a statement piece? Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and enhance your outfit with a statement piece in a metallic hue.

Mix Metals… Within Reason

According to outdated fashion rules, mixing metals is a big no. In today’s fashion world, you can certainly mix metals, as long as you do it thoughtfully. For example, silver and gold accessories look surprisingly chic together. But a silver top and gold bottoms might be a bit too harsh on the eye. If you’re hesitant to mix metal finishes, stick with a single finish or mix similar tones, like rose gold and yellow gold.

Do you have a piece of clothing, let’s call it a “vintage” piece, from the 80’s that you still wear to this day? Something that made a comeback? Please share in the comments!
