How To Style A Jean Jacket
1) Slim Fit Denim Jacket Over An LBD
In this look, Erin is wearing her ride-or-die Retrofete cropped denim jacket. These images are from a few years back, but this denim jacket is still SO very popular we just had to share it! It has a slim fit silhouette, light distressing, and ¾ length sleeves. The flattering details are what make this such a standout denim jacket. It has puff shoulders and an adjustable buckle in the back so you can cinch in the waist as much or as little as you want…both help create waist definition. It also has a bit of stretch to it so it’s not stiff and confining like some denim jackets can be. The shoulders are a little tight when you first put it on but Erin has found it gives a bit with a few wears.
Erin styled it with an asymmetrical little black midi dress and Golden Goose sneakers. Chic and comfy just never gets old! Below we share 2 more ways to style this same denim jacket.

2) Slim Fit Denim Jacket With A Maxi Skirt
Erin is wearing the same Retrofete jacket with an Alice & Olivia mixed print maxi skirt and a black fitted bodysuit and sandals. Since the jacket is more fitted and cropped, and the maxi skirt is high-waisted, you get that leg-lengthening and slimming effect. The exact maxi skirt is no longer available but we found a super similar one by Farm Rio and linked it below.
Style Tip: You can wear your denim jacket draped over your shoulders for an extra-elevated, effortless look!

3) Slim Fit Denim Jacket on Denim
This look may not be for everyone, but the idea of head-to-toe denim or a “Canadian Tuxedo” has been popular for years and is still so on-trend and relevant! Erin’s wearing her Retrofete denim jacket with a pair of jeans in a similar wash, but you could vary the wash if you prefer. Just add a simple white or black cami underneath, a belt to break up the denim, some booties or sandals, and voila! You can easily double up on your denim and rock this look too. This is one of those denim jacket outfits that would be so easy to recreate.

4) Denim Blazer Suit
Our next style of jean jacket is a super chic denim blazer. This is another double-denim look that is SO fresh and modern. Erin is wearing a Veronica Beard denim blend dickey jacket with matching denim pants. The cut of this blazer is so incredibly chic and flattering. The strategic darts, contrast stitching, extended shoulders, and fitted bodice with the bold gold buttons all help to create this inverted triangle effect to give the illusion of a slimmer waist.
The matching dark wash denim pants are just the right length for Erin at 5’4″ and they too have the same contrast stitching and center seam to elongate the legs. She paired them with a crisp white button-down with a large, pointed collar and a pair of Stuart Weitzman sock booties. You could easily wear these pieces as separates and we’ll show you a couple more ways to style this denim blazer in the next two looks.
5) Denim Blazer & White Jeans
Here’s the same Veronica Beard denim dickey jacket styled with a striped Veronica Beard t-shirt, a pair of white Mother wide-leg jeans, and See by Chloe wedges. This is a much more elevated version of your basic jeans and tee outfit!
6) Denim Blazer & Floral Mini Dress
For this look, we wanted to show you how this Veronica Beard denim dickey jacket is seasonless. We paired it with a pretty floral mini dress by Farm Rio, a pair of embellished slide sandals from Sam Edelman, and a neutral shoulder bag by Rebecca Minkoff. Just add your favorite gold jewelry to coordinate with the fabulous gold buttons on the jacket and you’re ready for brunch or a day of shopping. While this jacket may be more of an investment piece, it’s one you can wear year-round, so you’ll get some great mileage out of it!
This denim blazer trend is so hot right now that we wanted to share a few more options for you to shop…
7) Oversized Denim Jacket & Slip Skirt
The next denim jacket style we wanted to highlight has an oversized silhouette. Baggy jeans, coats, blazers, and jackets are trending right now. If you’ve been wanting to try the trend, this Free People oversized denim jacket would be a fun addition to your wardrobe at an affordable price point! It’s made from 100% midweight cotton with no stretch and has that perfect medium wash. It has patch pockets in the front, a snap closure, and the coolest large cuffs. To balance out the boxy silhouette of this jacket, we paired it with a sleek slip skirt by Madewell and a body-skimming flutter sleeve top. We also added some feminine accessories as a juxtaposition to the boyfriend style of the jacket.
8) Oversized Denim Jacket & Joggers
Here we styled the same oversized Free People denim jacket with a pair of slouchy All Saints joggers and a sexy, lacey black cami. This street style look can be worn extra edgy with a pair of combat or lug sole boots OR a pair of strappy black heels which dresses it up a bit. Just add your favorite bold accessories if you really want to make a statement!
9) Oversized Denim Jacket & Shorts
There are more ways to wear this oversized oversized Free People denim jacket than you might think! This last outfit combo is the most casual. We styled it with Erin’s favorite Rails Elis button-down shirt…it’s made from a very lightweight, gauzy cotton and it’s perfect for layering under your jacket. We added a pair of distressed Agolde denim shorts, See By Chloe platform wedges (another Erin’s fave!), and springy crossbody bag by AllSaints.
10) Classic Denim Jacket, Black Jeans & Trench
Next up, we just HAD to share this classic L’Agence Janelle denim jacket because it happens to be our YouTube co-producer Denise’s travel must-have! She said she packs it as a lightweight 3rd layer to wear with so many outfits. If you aren’t sure whether you want a light or dark wash, settling on a medium-wash denim jacket like this one will offer the most versatility. It has a bit of stretch to it, the sleeves are bracelet length, and we love the raw hem and cuffs.
In this first look, we styled it with a pair of black, straight-leg Agolde jeans, a buttery soft Skims tee, and a beautiful J. Crew trench that Erin has been loving and plans to share more about very soon! This jacket has more of a body-skimming silhouette so you can easily layer it under a trench or heavier coat. We added some chic Veronica Beard mules, simple jewelry, and a large Rebecca Minkoff tote. For a chic travel day outfit, just swap out the mules for some comfy sneakers.
11) Classic Denim Jacket & Twill Trousers
In this next look, we styled the L’Agence Janelle classic denim jacket with a pair of twill trousers by AG. Under the jacket, you can layer a cool cardigan like the one we shared in the graphic by Varley. It has open stitching, a zippered front, and an oversized collar that you can pull out and layer over the jacket collar. We added a pair of comfy Golden Goose sneakers and a leather Madewell bucket bag that Erin bought last fall (in the color Chocolate Raisin). This is an elevated casual outfit that looks so put together and intentional…comfort without sacrificing style!
If you’ve wondered whether or not Golden Goose sneakers are worth the money, Erin shares her honest review here.
12) Classic Denim Jacket & Black Trousers
This is another travel-friendly outfit idea featuring the same L’Agence Janelle denim jacket and a pair of Favorite Daughter pleated trousers. We added a crisp white button-down top and some pretty pearl accessories. The sneakers are perfect for dashing through an airport…you can literally run in them if need be! You can see 3 ways Erin styles the same trousers in this post if you’re interested. They come in both short and regular lengths and they’re a great wardrobe staple.
13) Ecru Denim Jacket & Mini Dress
If you already have a blue denim jacket and are looking for something a little different, we fell in love with this Veronica Beard ecru denim jacket. It’s so perfect for spring! It has more of a fitted silhouette, cool contrast stitching, and slip pockets. This jacket also has a bit of stretch to it so it won’t feel constricting. We paired it with a lovely Cinq a Sept pink mini dress and the prettiest neutral accessories. Can you see yourself wearing this outfit on your next vacation?
14) Ecru Denim Jacket & Jumpsuit
Another way to wear the Veronica Beard ecru denim jacket is with this striped track jumpsuit from Spanx. It’s made of the same AirEssentials material that all of Team Busbee has come to love! Our team member Kessa bought this jumpsuit and said she receives many compliments when wearing it. The white stripes are so strategic in the way they draw in at the waist and then back out to create that coveted hourglass shape. You can wear this casually like we styled it here with some platform sneakers or dress it up with a pair of heels and an elegant clutch. Meanwhile, there you are…wearing the comfiest sweatpants looking chic as ever.
If you’ve not yet tried any of the Spanx AirEssentials pieces, Erin shares all the details in this post. And, you can use code ERINXSPANX for 10% off and free shipping.
15) Ecru Denim Jacket & On-Trend Cuffed Jeans
Our very last denim jacket outfit inspiration idea includes the same Veronica Beard ecru jacket featured in the last 2 looks. But this time we styled it with a pair of super on-trend straight-leg cuffed jeans by Agolde. If you are looking for something new and exciting in the jeans department, cuffed jeans are it! These have a relaxed fit, but they aren’t what we’d call baggy. The cuff is optional so you can also wear them uncuffed if that is your preference. We added a striped Veronica Beard v-neck puff shoulder top and some kitten heel slingbacks in a neutral color to keep the line long and lean.
