Before diving into styles, let’s clear up a common misconception: you don’t always need the warmest, -40-degree-rated boots. I used to think that was a must, but unless you’re sledding, playing in the snow, or spending hours outside, you really don’t need that level of warmth. Instead, focus on finding waterproof boots—then pair them with cozy cashmere or wool socks to keep your feet toasty.

Here are some more pro tips when it comes to finding the best winter boots:

  1. Stick to Neutral Colors: Black or tan boots maximize versatility and pair effortlessly with wardrobe staples. I think black is the most versatile and will hide mud, dirt, etc, the best.
  2. Waterproof and Weather-Ready: Invest in boots made from water-resistant materials with non-slip, super grippy soles to keep you safe and warm. If you want extra warmth, look for shearling lined boots.
  3. Focus on Fit and Comfort: Whether you’re standing in the snow or walking icy streets, your boots should feel as good as they look!

By investing in the right winter boots and styling them thoughtfully, you’ll not only tackle the cold weather, but also elevate your everyday looks.

What Are You Using the Boots For?

Color, quality and comfort are key for maximum versatility, but it’s also important to consider your daily routine. There’s a big difference between the pair you bring on your snowy ski vacation vs. the pair you wear to walk to work.

Ski Chic

Think legit warm, cozy and comfy boots for the slopes, après ski, sledding, or snowmobiling—both functional and Instagram-worthy. Moon boots are very on-trend, but the first time you try these on, you’ll be a little perplexed by the fit and feel (sort of like sticking your foot in packaging foam). I prefer the newer styles with more structure and support. You can’t go wrong with Sorel boots for maximum warmth. Some of their styles are suited for extreme temps. I linked some of my favorite, most stylish options below.

Elevated Elegance

Sleek leather or suede booties that are perfect for dressing up. Think polished enough to wear to work in the rain, slush and snow or even wear out to dinner or on girl’s night.

Casual & Cool

Try casual ankle boots with chunky heels or lug soles. The Sorel Caribou boots I’m wearing in this post are a perfect example of this category. They’re waterproof, stylish, and practical… with a chunky heel that adds just the right amount of height. (I’m 5’4” so I really love snow boots with heels or a high wedge to add a little extra boost.)

My Winter Uniform

Here’s how I styled my casual, waterproof Sorel boots for a casual, elevated everyday look:

  • Jacket: The SAM. New York puffer jacket in “Jet” black—sleek, glossy, and ultra-warm. This is incredibly warm and versatile- Not to mention very modern and on-trend.
  • Jeans: Mother dark wash jeans that are both flattering and comfortable. The cropped style is a fail-safe way to go with winter boots. So there’s no issue with the hemline and the boots.
  • Sweater: A classic black cashmere turtleneck—the ultimate in timeless winter style. (It’s also the warmest option that still layers beautifully.)
  • Accessories: Tech-touch leather gloves lined with cashmere to keep my hands warm and functional, and oversized silver-and-black Ray-Ban aviators for that extra cool factor.

This outfit is perfect for a casual day running errands, doing school drop-offs, or meeting friends for coffee. It’s also proof that snow boots don’t have to detract from your outfit—they can actually elevate it. In my case, these boots also add literal elevation and height, which helps me look longer and taller (a bonus at 5’4”!)

Key Takeaways

Investing in the right winter boots is more than just a practical decision—it’s an opportunity to elevate your wardrobe, and feel confident no matter the occasion. Whether you’re braving icy sidewalks on your morning commute, hitting the slopes for a winter getaway, or running errands around town, the right pair of boots can be that perfect combination of fashion and function.

Remember: versatility, quality, and comfort are key. Stick to timeless neutrals, prioritize waterproof materials, and don’t underestimate the power of a well-chosen accessory—like a sleek pair of cashmere-lined gloves or oversized aviators—to complete your look.

With these tips and styling ideas, you’re ready to conquer the winter season with ease, warmth, and elegance. So, you can step into the season with boots (and outfits!) that are as practical as they are chic!

Love the article about winter boots. I live in Canada, close to Toronto, so I also understand snow and cold! LOL

My issue is what pants to wear, keeping the hem somewhat clean and dry is always an issue. Skinny jeans are easy, but boot cut etc, are long and look great, but then they can become a hot mess.

    Ideas??

LOVE LOVE the bog, and all you do and write. You have inspired me so much, and I thank you for that.

Thanks so much for reading, Ramona! You definitely know cold too! When you’re out walking in snow and slushy streets, it does work best to find a way to keep your jeans dry at the hem… that could mean you wear skinnies or a straight leg that day that can be tucked into your boots, or an ankle length or cropped jean that doesn’t hit the ground. When it is extremely cold – you’ll want to wear a base layer underneath to give you extra warmth of course too. If you have a thicker boot like I featured in this post, you can get away with a pair of full length jeans as long as they stay up off of the snow too. Hope that helps some… dressing in the winter DOES get tricky! Enjoy your week! ~Erin xo
