Basics. Basics. Basics. I drill down on this point over and over because having your wardrobe basics in your closet is SO important, I can’t stress it enough. When you have those basics, it’s easier to get dressed every day. But…I’m not a fan of the super basic basics. I prefer elevated basics. Elevated basics are those classic pieces you need in your wardrobe, but with a twist! So maybe your basic white tee is elevated with a cool cutout. Or your basic black booties are elevated with a fun, structural heel.
Don’t get me wrong, you DO need the classic basics. But after you have your classic dark wash skinny jeans, maybe your next pair of skinny jeans can be elevated with a fun wash, whiskering, or distressing. Here are some of the elevated basics I wear all the time…

#1 | Skinny Jeans
Moussy Vintage has quickly become my favorite denim brand. I still wear my basic dark wash skinny jeans, but these skinny jeans are special. The washes on Moussy jeans are so pretty and different. I also love the way the denim fits and feels. Most of their jeans have a shorter inseam, which is perfect for petites (I’m 5’4”).
These skinny jeans are the Lancaster skinny jeans and I wear them all the time! They are a little pricey but the way they wash and wear is worth it in my opinion. These are jeans you’ll wear for years, so when you consider the price per wear, they’re great! I also have them in this wash.

#2 | Sneakers
I did an entire post on everything you need to know about Golden Goose sneakers, including sizing info and if they’re worth the money. Spoiler alert…this is my third pair and I love them! There are definitely other (more affordable) options out there like Greats and Naturalizer. But I love that these are an elevated sneaker with the iconic star and distressing.

#3 | V-Neck Sweater
This v-neck Intermix sweater is probably the most classic basic out of the five I’m sharing in this post. But it does have a few things that set it apart…the thick-ribbed trim around the neck, sleeves, and hem, and the very slight high/low hemline. It’s also cashmere, which instantly elevates a basic v-neck sweater. If you’re looking for more affordable cashmere sweaters, check out this post all about Aqua!

#4 | White Tee
I love this new Free People tee so much I’ve been wearing it nonstop! It has these cool ruched sleeves that give it an elevated look. And the way the seams cheat in even slim the arms! And it comes in 5 other colors…I might need to buy the black one too! Note: I’m wearing a black bra underneath this tee and you can faintly see it. But wearing a nude/skin color bra is perfect and doesn’t show through!

#5 | Black Joggers
Joggers aren’t necessarily a basic that is on those wardrobe basics checklists, but I consider them a basic now that we’re all at home in our comfy clothes more often than not! These Norma Kamali joggers are AMAZING! Seriously, if you buy these…you will thank me! They’re so soft and comfortable they feel like pajamas. But they’re stylish and flattering enough to wear out of the house. They’re also great for petites…I’m 5’4” and they’re the perfect length on me!

Thank you, Marnie! You made my day! I’m so lucky to have you in my corner… ~Erin xo
I went to Intermix and bought the sweater today! I love it! Thank you so much for the recommendation.
I had walked by that store for years and years, thinking I couldn’t afford it and nothing would fit me. So glad I went in because I love it! I am going to get the sneakers too. I would rather have a few really nice clothes I love than a lot of clothes that are just something to wear.
You are SO welcome, Jen! I LOVE that! ~Erin xo
I love elevated basics, especially given that our climate is usually too warm to layer. Elevated basics give interest to an outfit when I can’t layer or add other pieces.
