If you’re new to the idea of a capsule wardrobe, make sure you check out this post where we break down how to build a capsule including choosing a color story, choosing basics wisely, and more. I like to incorporate basics into my wardrobe that are versatile but still have a little bit of interest…which is what I call basics-with-a-twist! Most of these basics are just that…they have small details that set them apart. When we release these capsule wardrobes each season, I usually include a few pieces I already own and some that I’m eyeing. But what’s different about THIS capsule is that I own almost every single one of these items. So you can trust me when I say they are amazing quality and really create the perfect capsule wardrobe! I know there’s a lot of black in this capsule, but you can always mix different pieces in or swap the black for a different fall neutral. Let’s dive in…
Tops & Sweaters
First, let’s talk tops and sweaters!
- If you’re looking for a classic white button-down shirt or a basic white v-neck tee, the two I’ve featured are amazing pieces that you’ll own for years and wear every week!
- I picked up the black ribbed sweater during the NSale this year along with the matching skirt and have already worn the sweater multiple ways.
- The black faux wrap-front top is SO good and the perfect elevated basic for fall. It’s a little pricey, but the quality is incredible and you’ll have it in your closet forever. I also own this top that’s very similar and a fraction of the price.
- Did you know animal print is back in? I grabbed this leopard top and it’s a great way to incorporate the trend into your wardrobe.
- The burgundy blouse is washable silk…yep, you read that correctly! I love the color for fall but it comes in a few other colors too.
- The white cable knit sweater was another NSale find and one of those easy basics to throw on with jeans.
- The cardigan is such a cozy, soft, easy 3rd layer I got it in ivory but it comes in a few colors.
Dresses & Bottoms
When it comes to fall bottoms, you can go with a dark wash, medium wash, or black jeans. You might also want to throw in a black pant if you work in an office. For this fall, I picked up two really cool pairs of dark wash jeans, a new pair of loungewear pants, a black skirt, and two black dresses.
- The Mother jeans have a classic dark wash, super flattering fit, and no whiskering or fading.
- The Cinq a Sept jeans are a little trendier with button-fly details, contrasting seams, and a more flared leg silhouette. These are perfect for taking any look up a notch because they feel dressier. You can see me wearing them in this post.
- The lounge pants by Spanx have super flattering white stripes and I also bought the matching track jacket!
- The skirt matches the black ribbed sweater I mentioned previously. I love them together, but you can also style it with one of the other tops or sweaters I’ve featured!
- The wrap dress is in a super lightweight cotton, which is perfect for anyone going through menopause or just runs hot. The fit is great, the fabric is lovely, and it can easily be worn with a jacket, tights, booties, etc. if it’s too cold for a mini dress where you live.
- The black midi dress is by one of my favorite affordable cashmere brands, Aqua. This dress is a blank canvas and can really be dressed up or down!
Outerwear
Depending on where you live, your outerwear needs may be different. I live in Colorado, so I get a lot of use out of my jackets and coats and really love to wear chic outerwear.
- The newest addition to my outerwear collection is this Generation Love blazer. It has the prettiest buttons that elevate it without making it too trendy. The fit is lovely and it looks great with everything from a tee and jeans to a blouse and trousers.
- The AllSaints leather jacket is a staple in my closet every year and it should be no surprise that it’s included in this capsule!
- Reiss makes really gorgeous coats, and I bought this one last year. The camel color is perfect for fall!
- If you were eyeing the black and white lounge pants, make sure you grab the matching jacket too! I love this jacket and wear it around the house at least once a week. (Use code ERINXSPANX for 15% off.)
Jewelry
Some of my favorite jewelry brands for high-quality pieces are Monica Vinader, Dean Davidon, and Julie Vos.
- I recently tried the brand Mignonne Gavigan and really loved this necklace. It’s beautiful and very high quality! If you’re looking for a necklace that’s a little more classic, I also really love this one.
- I have this Julie Vos bracelet in a different stone color, but I love the black with this capsule.
- The gold hoops are my go-to earrings when I don’t feel like thinking about it too hard. They go with everything and are just impactful enough without making too big of a statement.
- I’ve had this Monica Vinader ring for years and it’s a great everyday piece!
Accessories
No outfit would be complete without the right accessories!
- I bought these aviator sunnies that have a really cool sporty look and feel. If they aren’t your style, a pair of regular aviators will work and be just as versatile!
- The black belt is a solid basic and something you’ll wear almost every day.
- I love AllSaints scarves and this one is a great neutral option!
- The black handbag has a cool, edgy look and converts to a crossbody or shoulder bag.
- I have the tote in a lighter color, but I love the darker brown for fall.
Shoes & Boots
For fall, I recommend having a high-quality pair of black or brown booties, knee-high boots, dressy heels, and sneakers. But what shoes you have in your capsule wardrobe really depends on your lifestyle and what you already own!
- These brown booties are a great, everyday pair of shoes you can wear with jeans, skirts, and dresses. They look pretty dark in the product photo, but they are actually a much lighter brown in person.
- I just bought these black sneakers and can already tell I’m going to wear them nonstop this fall! If you’re looking for a more affordable pair of chic sneakers, check out this pair…I have them in gold, but they come in a bunch of colors and are very comfy!
- If you want a dressy heel but don’t want to wear a super-tall heel, these slingbacks are for you. I have them in white, but they also come in black!
- For a dressier boot option, these Schutz boots have been a heavy hitter in my closet for literally years! You can wear them with everything from jeans to skirts to dresses.
