How To Find The Perfect Handbag for Your Lifestyle

A handbag is a very personal decision. I can tell you the basic types of handbags you should have in your closet, but the overall style is up to you! A handbag can really show a woman’s personality and style. If you’re not sure how to find the perfect handbag for you, here are a few things to consider…

#1 | Size and Scale Of Handbag For Your Body

This might not be something you think about when you’re looking for a bag. But it’s very important! Obviously, a bag can’t make you look thinner. But it can still flatter your body. Think about the size of the bag compared to the size of your body. If you’re a tiny, petite woman, a giant tote will overwhelm your shape.

#2 | Size Of Bag For Needs

This is where it gets tricky. Say you are that tiny petite woman, but you have four kids…you’re going to need a large bag to tote all of their stuff! Make sure that you think about how you’ll use the bag. Do you need a work tote? A travel bag? A small bag for essentials? The best of both worlds would be having something that’s convertible! That’s why I’m creating my own handbag that’s convertible and will fit different needs and lifestyles! If you missed my videos on the handbag design process, make sure you watch those here and here.

#3 | Pockets

Along the same lines, what kind of pockets do you need on the inside and outside of the bag? You’ll be carrying this bag every day so don’t compromise. Do you need a laptop pocket on the inside and a cell phone pocket on the outside? Look at old handbags and make a list of what you do and don’t love. Then you’ll have your own personal handbag checklist to make sure you find the perfect handbag!

#4 | Handbag Style

There are a ton of bag styles out there. There are totes, backpacks, hobo bags, clutches, crossbody bags, satchels, shoulder bags, top handle bags, pouch bags, and the list goes on and on and on! After you’ve decided what you need the bag for, think about which bag style really suits your personal style. If your style is classic, you might like a structured top handle bag. If you tend to gravitate toward trends, you might like a fun pouch bag.

Some other things to consider…

  • Structure – Do you prefer a more structured handbag or something slouchy and casual?
  • Material – Some options are leather, faux leather, canvas, nylon, etc. Consider wear over time and budget for this one.
  • Hardware – I suggest keeping the hardware to a minimum. But you’ll also need to consider if you want gold or silver hardware. Don’t worry about if it’ll match the rest of your jewelry or accessories…it’s okay to mix metals now!

#5 | Budget

Obviously, I know that everyone is in different situations and therefore, has different budgets. And I am not here to tell you to spend money on things you don’t need. But if you’re searching for a high-quality, everyday handbag, consider the price per wear. And really take the time to find something you love! That checklist I suggested you make in tip #3 will come in handy here. Don’t spend money on something you don’t truly love, doesn’t work for you, or isn’t exactly what you want and need! #6 | Versatility

Nobody loves a 2-in-1 handbag more than me! Even with clothing or jewelry…if I can wear it more than one way, I’m a very happy camper! That’s why convertibility is key! The handbag and wallet I’m creating are both convertible and can be worn multiple ways. This was very important to me and I know it will be helpful for anyone looking for the perfect convertible handbag! A convertible bag is also great if you’re on a tighter budget and want more bang for your buck.
