How To Mix Prints And Look Modern

My Ideal Print Mix

One of the old fashion rules that you SHOULD break…? Mixing prints!  (Make sure you watch my recent video on other rules to break here).

Pattern play…is fun, modern, and unexpected! But it definitely can be tricky. I share some of my go-to tips for mixing prints and some mixed print looks below.

The Look

I just I LOVE this look because it’s unique, modern and unexpected. It’s also a simple formula that you can follow if you want to mix prints. When mixing prints, you stay within the same color story. In this case, it’s black and white. And, then you mix different scale prints. With my look above, I paired this striped midi skirt (by one of my favorite designers, Norma Kamali) with a striped bag by Staud.  This stripes on the skirt are angled inward, which creates the illusion of a slimmer body. The racing stripes is an added detail that I LOVE! Norma Kamali also makes pants in the same print.

On top, I’m wearing a not-so-basic, basic white tee. It has a geometric cutout on the chest and short sleeves. If you missed it, I did a post with Bloomingdales on how to find the perfect white tee here. BTW, Bloomingdale’s is having a sale right now, and some of those tees are included!

Next, I threw a basic black leather jacket over my shoulders. It’s an easy way to add chicness to the look. The one I’m wearing is by Joie and pricey, but you could wear whatever black leather jacket you have in your closet.

Accessories

Last but not least, I finished off the look with chic micro cat eye sunglasses and subtle feather earrings. The earrings are sold out but I linked other options below!

The chic white shoes I’m wearing by Sam Edelman are super affordable and comfy for heels. White shoes are very “in” right now in fashion, and the lucite strap detail is another hot trend.

Speaking of lucite, this see-through bag by Staud is VERY popular right now. Staud designs modern and of the moment bags that are popular in the bloggosphere (but not over-saturated). I bought the “mini” one and think it’s a great size, but it also comes in a larger size.

I finished off the look with chic micro cat eye sunglasses and subtle feather earrings. The earrings are sold out, but I linked other options below! Both micro sunnies and feathers are trends as well.

Other Print Mixes

I have an easy two-step method to help you mix prints like a pro! First, choose one color story. Keeping the colors consistent and simple is key! In the outfit above, I chose black and white as my color story. Second, be mindful of the scale of your prints. My method is to pick one large-scale print and one small-scale print. In this case, the bag is the large-scale print and my skirt is the small-scale print! That’s it! It’s that simple!

I am in I am in love with that Norma Kamali skirt! So so much so I bought it… Now I’m not sure how to style it in different ways and fear I will return it even though it is beautiful and I love it! Can you help me out with some styling tips?

The skirt is the outfit. Pair with VERY simple and classic tops. White tee, white cami, white tank, white blouse (minimal detail), black will also work. You can try gray top too!
