Yay for Trends!
Each season I share the best and most wearable fashion trends for women over 40. These are the trends that more mature women can actually wear without looking ridiculous. And lucky for us, comfy and cozy seems to be the theme of 2021! As with all trends, you should pick and choose the ones you love the most and then aim to give the trends your very own spin…. make them your own. You also do NOT have to try ANY of these trends. I just want to make sure you have all the resources you need to be your most stylish self!
Below are the *TOP 10* trends I know we can all wear. Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom to see the trends I’m planning to skip! And watch the video for more info on how to style the trends…
#1 | Luxe Loungewear
These are not your momma’s sweatsuits. And a LONG way from the old velour Juicy sets! Today’s matching sets are soft, comfortable, and much more sophisticated! Many of these sets are SO chic, you can easily go from the couch to errands…no problem. Luxe loungewear is almost like the new business casual as many of us are now working from home. There are even cashmere sets like this one (matching pants) by Monrow. For more affordable loungewear, Express has some super cute options!
I recently bought $2,000 worth of loungewear (returned most of it) and shared the best sets in this post.
#2 | Sweater Set
The sweater set is DEFINITELY getting a modern upgrade. It’s much SEXIER than the old cardigan, shell, pearl combo. Do you remember the pics of Katie Holmes that went viral of her wearing this sexy sweater set (left)??? Shortly after, we started seeing these sets popping up online. I tried to have my very own Katie moment with this A.L.C. sweater set (right) but ended up sending it back because it’s so pricey. I will continue the hunt, don’t worry! And, always remember, when trends first start it takes a while for there to be offerings at lower prices, but they always come. We just have to be patient.
#3 | Hoodies
The theme of the year of comfy and cozy… so it’s not surprisingly another sweatshirt derivative, the hoodie, is gaining steam! The key is to wear a hoodie with something that elevates it, like a blazer or leather jacket. You all know I love to wear my hoodie dickey with my Veronica Beard scuba blazer. That’s a simple way to jump on this trend without adding heat (hello hot flashes) or bulk to your frame. On the runways, they are showing hoodies as jackets with skirts which I think is a really edgy and modern look, but definitely tougher to pull off!
#4 | Knit Dresses (& Skirts)
Another COVID prompted fashion trend is knit dresses and skirts! They are definitely having a moment. I even wrote a post on how versatile they are here. They are wearable, but depending on the fit, they can be tricky. If you have a tummy, skip the fitted knits and opt for something looser or a-line instead.
I have two knit dresses. The gorgeous camel cashmere dress I bought last year during the Nordstrom Sale and the other is the chocolate brown ribbed dress by A.L.C. Both have long sleeves, and a longer hemline. These are great options when you want to leave the house but also stay warm. And, by leave the house, I mean pick up your takeout dinner, or go grocery shopping, because we aren’t doing that much these days, are we? These will be great to pull out all winter and well into spring. These are pretty classic too, so you don’t have to worry about them going out of style.
#5 | Relaxed Denim
Everything from mom jeans, to boyfriend, girlfriend, cropped, drop crotch, oversized, even denim joggers. The key is a more relaxed fit. (We’ve done a video breaking down all of the denim styles in case they are confusing to you. Full disclosure, they are confusing to me too.) I have quite a few pairs of baggier jeans but all of my favorites are by Moussy Vintage! Agolde is another great brand or check out Express for more affordable options. You don’t have to go super baggy to try this trend, simply swap the skin-tight skinnies for something that has a more relaxed fit.
I did a video talking about finding your perfect jeans which will really help you select the jeans that fit and flatter you best.
#6 | Wide Leg Pants
Like denim, pants are also getting more relaxed, over-sized, and less tapered. I personally LOVE this look and could wear this style of pants all the time. When you choose high-rise pants and pair them with heels, your legs will look a mile long! No joke.
#7 | Leather Puffers
Leather and faux leather puffers are VERY on-trend at the moment. These are wearable at any age, but just know that they will likely only be in style for a few years. I think it’s important to consider the duration of the trend when you deciding what trendy pieces to purchase. I suggest opting for a faux leather option so it doesn’t break the bank. The shape of these puffers is over-sized. Remember I talked about the oversized trend in my outerwear video?? It’s tough to get used to, but jackets and coats, even blazers are getting more and more over-sized.
#8 | Color Trends
There are multiple color trends every year. Which is great! Then you get to choose the one that speaks to you the most…
The Pantone colors of the year are Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow. It’s an unusual, standout combo for sure.
Other colors you will see now into spring are earth tones like rust reds, mustard yellows, and deep browns, anything neutral, pastels, and bright, bold colors like classic blue and my personal favorite, bubble gum pink.
#9 | Black & White Together
Black & white is ALWAYS in fashion so even though this is particularly “in” right now, you don’t have to worry about it going out of style. On the runways, we saw bold black and white checkerboard prints and color-blocking. As well as simple separates paired together. Other prints that will continue to be really hot going into spring are florals and stripes!
#10 | Belt It
The belt trend is not showing any signs of slowing down. You’ll see everything from designer logo belts to thick belts, belted jackets and blazers, even belted button-downs. Play around with the styling of your belts! Be careful about your torso proportion. Select a belt in a width that works for your upper body. I did a video called “how to determine your body type” to help you figure out if you have a long or short torso. I also did a belt video showing you 5 simple ways to style your belt. It’s older, but still relevant. Another big accessory trend… PEARLS.
