This Is My Favorite Spring Fashion Trend & How To Style It

Do you have a favorite print?? Polka dots are definitely one of my all-time faves. And, that’s why I’m so excited that this season they are VERY on trend!! Every season we dive in to the runways looking for the hottest fashion trends of the season. I’ve always been a huge fan of trying new trends because they are fun… and I love sharing them with you so you feel up-to-date and modern. While having your wardrobe basics is key, it’s also important that you feel excited about your wardrobe each season, and sometimes adding a trendy piece or two can help. As with all trends, only pick and choose what you love and what works best for your body shape and budget.

I just want to make sure you have all the information so you might feel more inspired to shop and get dressed this spring. Huge thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Polka Dot Spring Trend

Polka Dot Trend

The polka dot print trend started last fall and is still going strong! You can look at spring RTW collections by Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, and Area for more polka dot inspiration. You’ll find this bold and beautiful print on everything from skirts, tops, pants, dresses, shoes, etc. It typically comes in traditional black and white, which is super easy to style, versatile, and wearable. The spring runways even featured the classic print in red if you want to take it to the next level. But the black-and-white print will be the easiest way to incorporate the trend into your existing wardrobe. I linked a few of the polka dot pieces I’ve ordered below. Keep scrolling to see how I styled this lovely trend and tips on how to wear the polka dot trend in the most flattering ways for you

Polka Dot Skirt

To style the polka dot trend, I snagged this gorgeous A-line skirt by English Factory. Isn’t it SO pretty? I can see wearing this look to work, church, weddings, lunches, events, even Easter and Mother’s Day. I love the super flattering and feminine silhouette, classic pleats, and flowy fabric. The length is lovely, it’s fully lined, and it’s only $100! This is a larger-scale polka dot print, which gives it a retro vibe. In the past, I’ve mentioned that in general, smaller-scale prints like this skirt for example can be more slimming. But really, it’s all about how you style your print! There are a few things I did to style this skirt and make it even more flattering…

1) I created an hourglass shape by wearing a voluminous A-line skirt with a flutter sleeve top.
2) I cinched the waist even more with a waist belt.
3) I added height and lengthened my legs with neutral, skin-toned platform heels.

If you don’t wear skirts, we have other polka dot picks above.

How To Wear Polka Dots on Your Body

How To Wear Polka Dots on Your Body

Wearing prints can be tricky and I’ve done multiple posts on how to wear prints to flatter your body. But when a print trend pops up, it’s worth repeating those tips so that if you love the trend, you feel empowered to style it on your body! I have a rectangle body shape which basically means my shape is straight with little waist definition. You can see in the photos above that the sleeves on my top make my shoulder look broader while the belt cinches the waist and the skirt flares out…all three of these help create the illusion of that coveted hourglass body shape! Here are a few more tips for wearing polka dots based on different body shapes…

Inverted Triangle

Because your top half is larger than your bottom half, consider wearing polka dots on your bottom half to balance the proportions of your body. The skirt I’m wearing would be perfect for you!

Triangle

Because your bottom half is larger than your top half, consider wearing polka dots on your top half. This top paired with dark-color bottoms would be a great way for you to try the trend. However it’s worth noting that a-line and full skirts can mask bigger hips, butt and thighs so if you choose this silhouette, it is also slimming!

Circle

Because your waist is larger than your shoulders, hips, butt, and thighs, look for polka dot pieces that are waist-defining like wrap tops, pieces with ruching details around the tummy, and body-skimming tops you can leave untucked. This top paired with some high-waisted bottoms would be perfect. You can play around with tucking your printed top into your black, high-waisted skirt or pants too.
