Have the Right Supplies
The key to organizing any space, drawer, or cabinet is to have the right resources. So… what supplies do you need to get started? There are many things I would recommend, and I will explain more about them below. It is much easier to organize ANYTHING including your accessories… if you have your organization supplies at the ready.
If you have the space in your closet, I think displaying your jewelry is a really cool option. I used to do that in my Texas closet. Here in Telluride, we don’t have that much closet space, so I put all of my jewelry in my nightstand drawer. I use an expandable jewelry organizer in my drawers that has many compartments. Since it’s also expandable, it easily fits in your drawers. Just be sure to measure the height to make sure your drawers are deep enough for these trays. You always want to measure before ordering any supplies.
For handbags, my preference is to organize them in pretty linen bins from the Container Store here. These are also on MAJOR sale right now!
Other tools you may need are a belt rack, a belt hanger, a scarf hanger, a scarf rack, hat boxes, etc.
Organizing is really hard, and making sure you have the right organizational tools is your key to success!
Jewelry Organization
If you want to display your jewelry collection, I suggest you get velvet stands to display everything in an elegant manner. There are many variations of this idea for any type of jewelry you can imagine. But as mentioned, not everyone has the space to put everything on display, so an in-drawer option might work better. (Plus, your jewelry won’t get as dusty).
For organizing your jewelry in a drawer, I suggest an expandable jewelry tray with dividers. This jewelry organizer allows you to lay everything out in a neat and organized manner. An added benefit of having everything in a jewelry holder is that it isn’t as exposed to the elements, and will last a bit longer. With necklaces, an important thing to remember is to separate them and lay them side by side. A Necklace will get tangled very easily, and this is definitely something you want to avoid.
I organize my jewelry by type and color just like I do with the clothes in my closet.
Handbag Organization
Next up is organizing handbags. As with jewelry, there are a lot of options available to you, and it’s all about picking the best one for you and your space.
The most common option is to keep the bags on shelves. If you have the shelf space, you can store your bags quite easily. I choose to separate my bags to some extent. I keep my main bags in my closet because I know they are the ones I use the most. As for the rest of them, I store them in a hallway closet in these beautiful linen bins. I keep the taller bags in the back, and shorter in the front, for maximum visibility. These bins are very handy and I like that they’re slanted so you can see all of your bags!
Note: Many people choose to stuff their bags, so that they keep their shape, especially if it’s a high-quality bag. You can use tissue paper, old t-shirts, socks or anything that works!
Scarves, Belts, and Hats Organization
For scarves, you have a few options–including a wall organizer rack where you hang your scarves on hooks, folding them neatly and putting them into a bin, or even a scarf hanger.
For belts, I like to roll them and put them into a drawer (be sure to roll so the buckle is on the inside so it doesn’t scuff). A belt rack is an excellent option as well, as you can simply grab-and-go.
With hats, I like hat boxes (if you have the space). I actually store mine in a linen sweater box.
Again, your system depends largely on your space and your personal preference. Think of what might work best for you.
Bottom Line – Make a Plan!
The key to getting your accessories organized… think about what works best for your space and get the resources you need to make it happen. Once you have the tools, the organizational process will be SO much easier.
And, once you have a place for everything… staying organized will also be a cinch! Questions? Feel free to ask away in the comments below.
