Must-Have Outerwear & Bags

These two categories are important. You want to find high-quality pieces that will stand the test of time. That doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune. But it does mean you’ll need to do a thorough search to find exactly what you love. Find the breakdown and my suggestions below.

Balmain Blazer on fashion blogger Erin Busbee of Busbee Style

Perfect Black Blazer

The top three things to look for when shopping for your black blazer: 1) It should have one button that hits under the bust and above the belly button, 2) The hemline should be at hip length (where the leg meets the hip) 3) The sleeve should hit between the wrist and thumb joint. Find more here. One of my favorite blazers is the scuba blazer by Veronica Beard. I’m also in LOVE with this Balmain blazer above. You can find a more affordable option at J. Crew, Banana Republic, and Ann Taylor.

Black or Tan Trench Coat

Trench coats are so chic and versatile. Black is classic, but a tan trench can lighten up a wardrobe. Brands/retailers to check out: Club Monaco, Banana Republic, J. Crew, Everlane, Club Monaco, Cuyana, London Fog, Nordstrom and Burberry.

Black or Camel Wool Coat

You may not need a wool coat depending on where you live. The absolute splurge coat would be a Max Mara camel hair coat. I share more about that stunning coat in this video. I think Mackage also makes gorgeous wool coats. If you want something a bit more budget-friendly, I suggest checking Club Monaco.

Black Puffer Coat (Climate Dependent)

This is another item you may or may not need depending on where you live. In Colorado, I can wear a puffer almost every day. Some of my favorite brands to look at are Parajumpers, Canada Goose, SAM. (they have very modern and stylish options), The North Face, and Patagonia. For high-end, modern puffers, look at Nicole Benisti too. Herno is a Telluride mom favorite. They make awesome layering puffers. (You’ll understand if you live in a cold climate.)

Leather Jacket

Black is the most versatile leather jacket. But for those that want softer colors, you can look at brown, gray, or even blush. For the most classic leather jacket, find a classic jacket with minimal hardware, for maximum versatility. My favorites brands for leather jackets are Joie, IRO, Blank NYC, and Topshop. Watch this video on how to pick out the perfect moto jacket. Or read everything you need to know about the moto jacket here.

Black or Metallic Clutch (Day To Night)

This style is up to you. There are tons of options out there. When you’re looking, search for something sleek and minimal so it will go with more in your closet.

Black or Honey Brown Cross-body Bag

The same rules apply for finding a black or brown crossbody bag. You want to limit the zippers, tassels, etc. The simpler the bag, the more classic and versatile it will be. Great brands include: Staud, Strathberry, Rebecca Minkoff, Sole Society, Vince Camuto, and Clare V.

Black or Honey Brown Shoulder Bag

Your everyday handbag should also be quite minimal. Things to consider:  1) How useful the pockets are on the inside and 2) the overall size. Find something that works best for your lifestyle. If you’re a busy mom, you might need a larger bag.
