5 Chic Staples I’m Wearing Into Fall – Easy Ways to Transition Your Wardrobe

Fall has arrived, but what if we told you don’t have to break up with your summery favorites? September is the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe with versatile pieces that will easily transition from summer right into fall. In this funky time between seasons, think about maximizing wearability. It could be 80+ degrees one day and 20+ degrees cooler the next. So, you’ll want to wear those key items that can take you through all the unpredictable, seasonal weather shifts. In this post, we’re sharing five summer to fall transitional pieces you can layer and style in multiple ways right now and for weeks to come!

Summer to Fall Transitional Pieces

Maxi Dress

Maxi dresses are such a perfect choice for summer, but you can keep them on rotation through fall too with just a bit of layering and intentional accessory swaps. Erin is wearing a light and breezy Veronica Beard shirtdress with a halter-style neckline and a light tan stripe. It has buttons down the front, flattering ruching in the tummy area, and an open back…perfect for warm days. But to transition this dress into fall, just add a denim jacket, moto jacket, leather jacket or blazer, some booties, and rich brown accessories. The darker tones paired with the lighter dress will fall-ify your look!

Button-down

Erin picked up this western-inspired Rails button-down during the Nordstrom Sale. It is SO incredibly soft and lightweight. It makes a front-tuck easy-peasy. For summer, she styled it with a pair of lighter-wash wide-leg jeans and wedge sandals for an on-trend double denim look. So, we wanted to recreate the same concept for fall. We swapped the lighter wash jeans for darker denim and added a cozy (and affordable!) boyfriend cardigan, sock booties, and a gorgeous leopard scarf that will be ideal for SO many fall outfits. When you want to wear your summer favorites into the next season, just anchor them with rich neutral, darker tones.

Printed Blouse

Aaand, speaking of animal prints, how chic is this sleeveless leopard top from Bloomingdale’s? It’s tough to see under Erin’s jacket, but it’s SO good. Where do we start? For one, the subtle brown/black print is very chic. Also, since it’s sleeveless you can layer over it or wear it alone. And, the ruffled shoulder detail, mesh overlays and split neck make this piece look way pricier than it is (it’s $68!).  Erin’s wearing it with a black Generation Love jacket (those buttons!), black booties, and accessories. We wanted to share another way to wear it on those very warm fall days when you want to look seasonally appropriate but not get overheated. We love the idea of wearing it with this washable silk skirt from Quince and some breathable mesh flats to keep you nice and cool. Add a jacket if it gets chilly!

Dark Denim

Sure, dark wash denim can be worn year-round but it becomes a closet staple in fall. These fabulous Mother flared jeans are so slimming and streamlined…no fading or whiskering so they are leg-lengthening with or without heels. Erin’s wearing them with the same Generation Love tweed jacket from the previous look, a simple white tee, and some comfy Veronica Beard slip-on sneakers. For those who need a bit less layering for warmer fall temps, you can pair your dark wash denim with a sleeveless sweater. We love this one from J.Crew with the gold button details. You could also look for a sleeveless sweater in a traditional fall hue like burgundy or olive green. We’ll link some options below. Add some fall accessories like a hat and textured bag and you’re ready for fall even when it’s hot outside.

Open Knit Sweater

An open-knit sweater is another great transitional piece because it’s breathable and not super heavy. This sweater by Free People has a slouchy, cropped fit, drapey sleeves, and a cable design. Erin is wearing it with a pair of wide-leg denim and wedges but if you need some added warmth, you can layer a button-down underneath it. You can tuck the button-down in or leave the shirt tails peeking out beneath the sweater hem. We love how it looks with these chocolate brown jeans by AG and the coordinating brown accessories. Very fall, right?
