style tips to hide a tummy
You might be thinking, Hmmmm, wait…why is Erin telling us about how to hide a tummy when she doesn’t have a tummy? Erin would tell you she does have a tummy. She says she’s just very good at hiding it! And, regardless of whether your tummy is large, medium, or just minimally troublesome for you, everyone should be able to dress in a way that makes them feel confident and secure about their body. As a wardrobe stylist for years, Erin dressed many women of ALL different shapes and sizes. Learning how to dress to mask a tummy is one of the most frequent requests…because it’s such a common issue for women. So rest-assured, she really knows her stuff!
Tip # 1 – Wear Dark Wash High-Rise Jeans
As you build an outfit to minimize the focus on your midsection, start with a dark wash pair of high-rise jeans or pants. The higher rise will come up over your tummy area. And the waist will land at the smaller part of a woman’s body. Now, you might still have a bit of a puffed-out tummy under the jeans. But we’ll get to that in just a minute. The dark wash jeans will create a smooth and slimming effect. AND the higher rise will also give the appearance of longer legs. A bonus tip for petite women!
You can always check the product description online to learn what the rise is. We’d recommend finding a pair in the 9″-12″ zone for maximum coverage. Sharing a few of Erin’s favorite brands and styles below…
Tip #2 – Choose a Dark Top with a Finished Hem
Our next tip is…how to choose the most flattering top to wear with your dark wash, high rise jeans (or pants)! You’ll want to wear a top with a finished bottom, preferably in a dark color. Dark colors are always going to be more forgiving and slimming across the board. This band and the extra draping helps to mask a tummy. You can also try a top with a rounded hem. Since the rounded hem comes up on the sides of the hip, you’ll minimize the tummy AND add some length to your legs.
The top pictured above by Ramy Brook is one you can wear for SO many occasions. Wear it to the office (just add a cami underneath) and then out for date night. Sexy, sophisticated AND…yes, flattering at the mid-section.
Tip #3 – Wear a Tailored Jacket
Alright ladies, are you ready for the star of the show? The piece de resistance for concealing a tummy? Our final tip and arguably THE most important, is to layer a tailored blazer or jacket over your top and jeans. This is the most effective way to really slim the mid-section. It will skim right over any excess weight you might want to conceal on your sides and it will completely cover any potential puffing around your belly area.
With this Generation Love Ponte knit blazer, you can see how the fitted tailoring in all the right places, gives Erin that coveted hourglass shape. The contrasting gold buttons also creates a vertical line down the center which is super elongating and slimming. The Ponte knit is stretchy and not at all confining (which can sometimes be the case with blazers). This tailored jacket, we’re telling you… is going to be your new best friend! This jacket was one of our best-sellers for 2024. Just get ready for the compliments to roll on in! We’ll link it below with a few other stunning options as well.
