The Best Clean Beauty Products You Can Buy At Target

Convenience is key, right!? Especially for busy women like us! I live in a small mountain town, so I don’t have the convenience of running into a Target on the way home and grabbing whatever clean beauty product I’ve been eyeing. BUT, I know many of you do! So I wanted to share some of the best and most popular clean beauty brands at Target! If you’re unfamiliar with clean beauty, check out my series on clean and nontoxic beauty products and brands. I recommend reading my intro to clean beauty post first!

Clean Beauty brands and products at Target, best clean beauty brands from Target

Target’s Clean Beauty

If you’re looking to clean up your beauty routine but don’t want to spend a ton of money, Target is a great option. To find products you want without the ingredients you don’t want, look for the green Target Clean symbol online or in-stores. For my post on ingredients to avoid, check out this post. Don’t forget you need to do your own research and learn about what ingredients and products are safe. Just because a brand is safe doesn’t mean every single product is safe!

Best Clean Beauty Brands At Target

Depending on your local Target, you can get some clean products on your next Target run. But if not, you can order online and get them delivered pretty quickly. These are the best clean beauty brands to try…

For Makeup…

  1. Honest Beauty – They also have some great skincare! Most of their products score from 1-3 on EWG.
  2. W3ll People – This is our Creative Director, Kaitlyn’s favorite clean beauty brand at Target. Most of their products are EWG Verified. If you don’t know what that means, make sure you read the other clean beauty posts! Her two favorites by W3ll People are the Expressionist Mascara and Hypnotist Eye Pencil.
  3. e.l.f. – This brand is really popular and has some great reviews. A lot of their products score from 1-3 on EWG.

For Skin & Hair…

  1. Versed – This is a fairly new brand to Target and has gained popularity. They have great skincare. Their Brightening Serum, Lip Oil, and Hydration Station Booster with Hyaluronic Acid are all EWG Verified! The rest of their products score well too!
  2. Odele – This is a really popular haircare brand! Make sure you check specific items on EWG.
  3. Yes To – These products are great but be careful and read the ingredients if you have any allergies. Some of their products are made with foods like blueberries, tomatoes, watermelon, etc.
  4. Pixi – This is a popular brand for skincare and makeup!
  5. Love Beauty & Planet – These products are really popular because they smell great! They are strong so keep that in mind of you are usually fragrance tentative. Most of their products score higher on EWG because of fragrance.

For Personal Care…

  1. Dr. Bronner’s – This is a great brand for toothpaste, body wash, and soap!
  2. Native – I use Native’s deodorant and love it! They also have toothpaste and body wash now. I shared everything you need to know about switching to natural deodorant here.
  3. EverSpring – This brand is good for hand soap, detergent, essential oils, cleaning supplies, and more!

These Are The *Best* Clean Beauty Brands at Walmart!

Clean Beauty From Walmart

Over the past few months, I’ve been working on cleaning up my beauty routine. If you’re unfamiliar with clean beauty or where to start, I highly suggest reading my clean beauty series. posts here. The first post in the series breaks down the clean beauty industry and explains the difference between labels like nontoxic, cruelty-free, and organic. I try to share helpful information about clean beauty or products once a month! This month I’m sharing some of the best clean beauty products from Walmart! You can find my favorites and some great brands below…

Clean Beauty from Walmart that is affordable, featuring Cleen serum

Clean beauty from Walmart featuring Cleen papaya serum with vitamin c Clean beauty from Walmart featuring Cleen papaya serum with vitamin c

Clean beauty from walmart featuring Cleen papaya vitamin c serum

#1 | Cleen Beauty Vitamin C Papaya Glow Serum

The first clean product I wanted to share is this vitamin c serum. If you don’t use vitamin c, you should! It’s a miracle worker. Literally. It almost instantly brightens and smooths your skin. This serum feels amazing on my skin (it’s a thinner consistency) and the citrus scent is lovely (not too strong). And the best part is that it’s only $10! Most vitamin c serums are much more expensive so it’s nice to find something that’s affordable AND that works!

How to use: Shake before use. Apply 3-4 drops onto clean skin. Gently dab with fingertips until product is fully absorbed. Follow with a moisturizer.
EWG Score: 4
(If you’re not sure what this EWG score is, make sure you read my clean beauty posts to find out more!)

#2 | RMS Beauty Living Luminizer Highlighter

RMS Beauty is a very popular clean beauty brand. They have amazing multi-purpose products. For example, their Lip2Cheek balm that you can use on…your lips as balm and cheeks as blush! I tried the highlighter (above) and love it! It’s a great product to have in your bag when you need a quick touch up and some brightening. It’s great for all skin tones and gives a beautiful, bright finish.

How to use: Apply with your fingers where you would normally put highlighter (cheekbones, bridge of the nose, inner corner of eyes, etc.)
EWG Score: 1

#3 | Mychelle Perfect C PRO Serum

Can you tell I like products that brighten my skin…yes, this is another vitamin c serum! This Mychelle serum is different than the Cleen Beauty serum in a couple of different ways…it has a thicker consistency, it’s a little more expensive (still under $35), and it has a higher concentration of vitamin c. It’s formulated with the highest, active level of vitamin c you can get (25%). So you know it’ll really help with your skin’s brightness, texture, and signs of aging!

How to use: Shake well before use. Apply one pump to damp skin in the morning after cleansing. If layering serums, use Perfect C Pro Serum first.
EWG Score: EWG Verified

Clean beauty from walmart featuring REN body oil dry with rose scent

Clean beauty from walmart featuring REN body oil dry with rose scent

#4 | REN Skincare Moroccan Rose Gold Glow Perfect Dry Oil

This oil is amazing! I love the smell and the way it makes my skin feel. I have to go big on the moisturizer here in Telluride, Colorado because there is literally ZERO humidity and we live at 9,000+ feet. Quick note…some of REN Skincare’s products have higher scores on EWG because of what they use in their natural fragrances. A lot of it is very citrusy so if you’re allergic to citrus, skip it. If you just have sensitive skin, try it on a small part of your skin before putting it all over to make sure you don’t have a reaction. That’s something you should do with all new products anyways!

How to use: Spray onto skin and gently massage until fully absorbed
EWG Score: 6 – This is because of the fragrance

A note about fragrance… we don’t know what is in it exactly because scents are proprietary and the brand protects these as part of what makes their products special.  In other words, the fragrance doesn’t always equal bad.

#5 | First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Intense Hydration Cream

This has been a favorite for years! You can use it anywhere on your body and it’s so hydrating! I love using it on my hands during the fall/winter months when they get really dry and cracked.

How to use: Apply to face and/or body at least twice daily or as needed to restore and soothe dry, uncomfortable skin.
EWG Score: 2

#6 | Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter

This body lotion is so good! I’ve used a few other Josie Maran products so I was excited to try the body butter! It left my skin feeling so soft and smooth. Plus, it doesn’t feel too heavy. It’s a really lightweight moisturizer, which I love because I don’t like to feel sticky after I put on lotion.

How to use: Rub into the skin to absorb. It absorbs quickly.
EWG Score: 2

What is the Difference Between Natural and Clean Beauty?

Cleaner Beauty and Skincare Products

If you missed the first four blog posts from my clean beauty series, be sure to check out what exactly clean beauty is by reading the rest of my clean beauty series here. In the first post, I broke down what each clean-beauty label actually means, highlighting the differences between clean, natural, non-toxic, etc. To me, “clean” is the most important. But if you’re shooting for “natural” skincare, this post is for you! Ulta Beauty has a wide variety of natural skincare and I’m sharing some favorites!

As a reminder “natural” means containing ingredients that are not man-made. And “clean” is safe for people AND the planet. Example: A product that has safe ingredients and packaging that’s safe for the environment because it can be recycled or it is biodegradable. A product can be labeled “natural” and still have chemicals in it so be sure to read your labels!!

If any of you remember, I was part of an Ulta Beauty campaign where my 45-year old mug was poster-size in 1100+ stores nationwide. It was an incredible experience and honor. And I can’t even begin to convey how much I love Ulta Beauty! You can watch more about that project here.

Favorite Clean Skincare Brands at Ulta:

Remember clean is different than natural. Clean means the product is safe for people AND the planet. Natural means it contains some natural ingredients that come from mother nature. It does not necessarily mean ALL of the ingredients are natural so be sure to read the label carefully.

Here Is The Reason Why Clean Beauty Is Confusing

A Closer Look

If you missed my last clean beauty post, make sure you read that here. It’s a great place to start and help you get acquainted with terms surrounding clean beauty, what it is, and why you should care. In this post, I’m breaking down some of the cosmetics regulations that make clean beauty so confusing. Nope…it’s not just you. I’m left scratching my head more often than not when it comes to this topic. I truly don’t want to confuse you more, but I think it’s important to present the facts. And, the fact is… what you see on a label… is not always what you get. When I started the research, I was stunned by what I found. Hopefully, this information helps you when you are searching for products to clean up your own beauty routine.

clean beauty - list of the most harmful ingredients, with beauty blogger over 40, Erin Busbee of Busbee style

Problems With Clean Beauty

There are many problems with the beauty and cosmetics industry. But there are three main issues surround clean beauty…

Lack Of Regulation

If you read post #1, at this point, you might be wondering how companies and beauty brands get away with putting harmful ingredients into products. The answer is…there’s a lack of regulation. The last cosmetics law passed by the FDA was in 1938…that’s over 80 years ago!! It’s not as big of a problem in other countries though. In the EU, there are over 1,300 products banned from use because they are questionable or proven harmful. The US only has 11 products banned. Total. Isn’t that scary!? It gets worse…

Reliance On Company Ethics

If you go to the store, buy a product, put it on your skin, have a severe reaction, and report it to the brand or company. The brand/company has no legal obligation to report that incident to the FDA. And even if a report is made to the FDA (which has to be done voluntarily by the company/brand), the FDA has no authority to pull the product from production or even issue a recall. So it’s up to the companies to make an ethical decision to either recall products or make cleaner products from the get-go. Hmm… do you think most companies will pull a product from the shelves when they stand to lose a boatload of money? I’m guessing no.

False Labeling

One last issue I wanted to address… false labeling. On top of all of this, companies are not required to include all of the ingredients on the label. For example, when you see “fragrance” or “parfum” on a label. That fragrance could include over 300 ingredients. But since it’s considered a trade secret, it does not have to be listed. And in contrast, products labeled “unscented” could actually have fragrance. Which is absurd!! How are you supposed to be careful about what you’re putting in or on your body if you’re not even provided all of the information!? They can also label their products as “clean,” “natural” or “organic” and the products still contain harmful ingredients. Perplexing, I know. In other words, what you see on the label…is not always what you get.
