Why This Black Dress Has a Permanent Spot in My Closet

You think you won’t wear a little black dress in summer. Here’s why you just might change your mind.

We tend to think black is not doable in summer because it’s too hot, but that’s usually a fabric problem, not a color problem.

The key is the right LBD. It all comes down to fit and fabric.

For summer, you want something lightweight and breathable… typically a natural fabric like cotton or linen. And in terms of fit, you’re looking for a dress that’s genuinely flattering for your shape. One you feel confident and comfortable in.

Once you find that combo? It goes everywhere. And, can work for every season!

For me, that dress is the Rails Franca Dress. I’ve worn it so many times in so many different countries, it should have its own frequent flyer number. It’s the piece I reach for again and again. (And, it even has pockets!) The A-line skirt creates a beautiful, feminine shape…and is also perfect if you want to minimize the hips, butt and thighs. Here is a version for less that is quite similiar that allows you to wear a regular bra.

Not every little black dress earns staple status. This one absolutely does and here’s why.

First Let’s Address Some of Your Most Common LBD Questions

Q: Can you really wear a black dress year-round?
A: Yes — and this is actually one of the biggest myths in getting dressed. Black isn’t a fall/winter color, it’s a neutral. The key is fabric. A flowy, lightweight fabric wears beautifully in summer. Layer it in fall. Add tights and a coat in winter. The dress doesn’t change — your layers do.

Q: How do you make a black dress look different every time you wear it?
A: Three levers: shoes, layers, and accessories. Swap sandals for boots and you have a completely different outfit. Add a blazer and it’s polished. Throw on a denim jacket and it’s casual. Here’s the thing — a truly great black dress isn’t one outfit. It’s ten.

Q: What shoes work best with a black dress?
A: Most shoes work — but the right answer depends on the look you want. Skin-colored strappy sandals keep it leg lengthening and warm-weather ready. Ankle boots add edge. Wedge metallic sandals add a pop while also keeping your legs looking long. White sneakers are having a major moment with black dresses right now. They are cute and casual.

black dress look #1 – vacation ready

Bora Bora was the backdrop — but the Rails Franca Dress works anywhere, anytime. Truly. You’ll see all the ways I styled it below.

I styled it with a white tank to add more coverage at the chest and a contrast pop. On my feet, these Espadrille Wedge Sandals — pricey, but this brand delivers on quality, style and comfort. This is my third pair of sandals by Pedro Garcia. Plus, that little lift feels so resort-ready and gives the whole outfit a polished, dressed up feel without the skinny heel commitment.

And my Prada Crochet Tote — spacious enough for all the beach day essentials, chic enough to carry straight to dinner. The perfect vacation bag. You might remember this bag from my summer capsule here. I’ve had it for almost two years. This year’s version is brown and raffia and just as gorgeous!

black dress look #2 – elegant evenings

What a difference a simple accessory can make — in this case, a belt.

The Rag & Bone Belt with both looks above adds instant waist definition and a pop that really transforms the look of the dress.

On the left, I’m sporting the Odissi Wedges, the highest wedges I own —4.5 inches of height that elongate the legs beautifully while somehow managing to stay comfortable. (Currently on my can’t-wait list — six months post double bunion surgery and my toes aren’t ready yet.)

In both outfits I’m carrying a small raffia bag. The most gorgeous Cult Gaia Raffia Clutch (left) is still in stock. It’s a go-to elegant summer bag.

For jewelry — less is more. Try a stunning, everyday diamond tennis necklace bracelet like this one. It’s lab grown and just as beautiful and brilliant as mined diamonds for much less. Simple, stunning, and the perfect finishing touch.

black dress look #3 – casual daytime

Yes, you can absolutely wear this dress for a casual daytime look.

I paired it with black platform espadrille sneakers for that modern edge (Here is a similar pair) — they also adds a little extra height which will appeal to those of you who are petite like me.

The cropped denim moto jacket adds some coverage and changes the look of the dress. You can also try a suede or leather jacket. Whatever you have in the closet.

And the finishing touch? These Loewe sunglasses — so modern, so chic, and such an easy way to make your outfit feel more intentional. Want more sunglass inspo? I’ve got a full post of my favorites right here.

This is your brunch outfit. Your travel day outfit. Your running-errands-and-still-looking-great outfit.
