Transitional Fashion Finds
Does anyone else get that ‘summer is almost over’ mild sense of panic? You know where you’re not quite ready to give up the looser schedule and jump back onto the fall, back-to-school wheel? Oh, the emotional roller coaster that August brings! Even though I’m in denial about the end of summer, when it comes to shopping, I definitely have my eyes on fall. Anything I am adding to cart right now has to be fall-ready, or a definite “wear now, wear later” piece. This is the secret that many stylish, savvy shoppers have always known; the more classic pieces you buy, that will easily transition from one season to the next, the better! You’ll get more bang for your buck and really maximize your wardrobe when each piece works for multiple seasons.
One example of a transitional piece you can wear now and well into fall… sweaters. Today I’m sharing 2 of my new favorite transitional sweaters, how to style them, and a few others I have my eye on.
Huge thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Vince Baja Pointelle Sweater
The wear now, wear later, transitional sweaters are typically lightweight and breathable so you don’t get hot when temps are high, and they also provide warmth and coverage to easily make that transition into fall. You can layer one over a summer dress or pair it with your favorite shorts or jeans. They’re pretty perfect for navigating those unpredictable summer-to-fall temperatures. First up is this gorgeous open-knit sweater by Vince. It’s airy and a lovely weight for this time of year. It fits true to size and skims the body. I love the split neck and collar for showing off a necklace too. I also really appreciate the length…not too long or too cropped. It’s just right! (Kinda like the Goldilocks of sweaters ;)) You can leave it untucked or half-tuck it into your jeans, trousers or shorts really easily. Don’t hesitate to wear a sweater like this with trousers too for a simple and chic office outfit.
Wear Now Wear Later
I styled the sweater with a pair of high-rise, wide-leg jeans by Paige. I love the silhouette of these jeans. They are super flattering and have a 31” inseam which is perfect for me with a pair of heels (I’m 5’4” for reference). But, they do have a raw hem so if you wanted to cut them shorter, that’s an easy fix. The denim has structure, so you feel secure and they retain their shape even after wearing them all day. The jeans run a little large, and I sized down, but if you prefer a looser fit, go with your regular size. I completed the look with some rich tan accessories. I’m wearing a pair of Vince Pia wedges that are also perfect summer-to-fall transitional shoes and a convertible leather bag by Coach. I added a toggle necklace and the perfect pair of Ray-Ban sunnies.
To make this look fall-ready, all you need to do is layer a blazer or lightweight jacket over the sweater and swap out the sandals for some chic booties.
Free People Cable Stitch Pullover
Are you already seeing temps dipping at night? Here in Telluride it literally got down to 40 degrees last night. Yikes! This cotton-blend Free People sweater is another sweater that you can wear now and easily transition into fall. It has a slouchy, slightly cropped fit, dramatic drapey sleeves, and cool ribbed cuffs. But it’s the flattering vertical lines of the cable knit that really caught my eye. If you want to add some length to your frame, this sweater is sneaky good! I’m wearing the ivory color, but it also comes in 5 other shades. It’s hard to pick a favorite. I styled it with the same Paige jeans and accessories as the first look, but as we move into fall, this sweater would look amazing with dark-wash denim and booties, a silky slip skirt, or a pair of trousers. All of which are simple outfit formulas. I could see this being a perfect teacher sweater too.
More Summer Sweaters
When looking for that perfect summer sweater that can transition into fall, you want to keep fabric, cut, and weight in mind. While wool and cashmere are great for chilly temps and layering, you want to look for cotton and cotton blends to keep you cool when you just need a little something to cover your arms in the AC or on a brisk (not cold!) night. Color is key too. I prefer neutral shades for transitioning into fall like ivory, white, tan, beige, navy…you get the idea. Here are a few I’m loving and wanted to share.

In Southern California we recently got rid of fog and transitioned to summer. Ocean temperature is warm it’s our perfect time of the year. It will be cooling a little but be nice until Thanksgiving when jackets and sweaters are on. Never ready to let go of perfect weather sunny and warm. This is what it is like living on the beach ocean views with nice breeze.
Thank you for all the wonderful tips and tricks. Purchased many of your recommendations for fall from Nordstrom looking forward to wearing them.
