If you’re anything like us, escaping the cold weather for a warm, sunny destination feels like the ultimate reset. But transitioning from freezing temperatures to balmy breezes can be a bit of a shock to your body. That’s where the right travel outfits come in! Of course, figuring out exactly what to wear when going from cozy winter layers to warm summer-like styles can be tricky. That’s why today, we’re sharing a roundup of chic, practical outfits that are perfect for traveling from cold to hot weather.
10 Travel Clothes From Cold To Hot Weather
Lightweight Sweater & Pants
This first outfit is a great example of something you could wear to the airport when you’re headed somewhere warm and sunny. Erin’s wearing a lightweight ribbed sweater that has a good amount of heft, but is still breathable. If you’re worried about being too hot when you reach your destination, consider throwing on a tank top underneath so you can shed the sweater. That’s one of our most important tips…be prepared to shed some layers! But this sweater is a great basic to have on a trip to a hot climate in case it gets chilly at night or you’re in an overly air-conditioned restaurant.
On her bottom half, Erin’s wearing a pair of super lightweight wide-leg pants by Reiss. We love the black stripe down the side that makes these pants very flattering. These are lightweight enough for you to wear when you arrive at your warm getaway too. On her feet, Erin’s wearing a pair of black and white sneakers by Veronica Beard, but you could swap those for whatever your favorite travel sneaker is! Plus, sneakers are a must no matter where you’re traveling!
Blazer & Jeans
If you prefer an outfit that’s a little more polished, this look is perfect! Erin’s wearing a pair of dark wash jeans that have a flattering high-rise and flared leg. She styled the jeans with the same pair of sneakers, a classic V-neck tee, and a blazer. This tee is one of Erin’s absolute favorites and a great basic for any trip. The blazer is another lovely piece to have on your trip, even if it’s hot. Having a sophisticated 3rd layer for dinner is always nice, even if you just drape it over your shoulders.
Quick note: This Beis suitcase is SO good! If you’re in the market for a new suitcase, this one has some amazing features and Erin highly recommends it!
Sweater & Jeans
This is such a simple but chic outfit idea! Erin’s wearing a white cable knit sweater with a pair of white jeans and sneakers. If you’re worried about the sweater, wear a tank or lightweight long sleeved tee underneath so you can take the sweater off if you need to. By the way, this sweater is a really great fall basic, and the jeans have an asymmetrical hem that’s really cool. The Dolce Vita sneakers are super affordable and some of Erin’s new faves! All three of these pieces are nice to have on a warm weather trip too!
Lightweight Sweater, Jeans & Blazer
Erin wore this travel outfit on a recent trip to Italy and felt very comfy in-flight. She has on a super lightweight pair of baggy jeans that are trendy and fun for any trip. Her sneakers are comfy and the raffia detail will easily transition to a more tropical destination. On her top half, she has on a white blazer and a super lightweight, open-knit sweater. Underneath the sweater she’s wearing a ribbed tank just in case she got hot. But the open-knit fabric is so breathable that it’s a great option for transitioning to cold to hot weather.
Sweatpants, Sweater & Blazer
This look is very similar to the last look but a little cozier! Erin’s wearing a similar lightweight, breathable sweater, tank underneath, and lightweight blazer on top. But instead of jeans, she’s wearing a pair of jogger sweatpants. And she added a lightweight scarf that’s nice for wrapping around her shoulders or keeping in her bag if she gets cold at any point during a trip.
Elevated Matching Set
How cozy does this Frank & Eileen set look?? It’s SO soft, snuggly, and chic! It’s fleece and cotton so you get that perfect mix of cozy warmth and lightweight breathability. Erin has it styled with wedges, but you could make it more travel-ready with a pair of sneakers! If you’re coming from somewhere super cold and need a jacket, try it with a piece of outerwear you know you’ll wear on your trip too.
Sweatpants & Hoodie
When in doubt, go with a simple but cozy loungewear set. The fabric of these Quince sweatpants and hoodie is so soft but not too heavy. These pants are a great option for petites or anyone who prefers a jogger when they travel over a wide-leg silhouette. Erin styled them with a pair of New Balance sneakers that are perfect for travel and any trip!
Cozy Matching Set
We’ve raved about Spanx AirEssentials pieces for years and we will absolutely keep sharing them because they are just. that. good. The fabric is super lightweight and breathable and a must-try if you haven’t already! Erin really loves the half-zip pullover and wide-leg pants for travel…no matter where she’s headed! Don’t forget you can always use Erin’s code ERINXSPANX for 10% off and free shipping.

How To Choose Clothes For Travel
We wanted to share a few tips on how to choose the right clothes for travel. So much of what you wear when you’re traveling from cold to hot weather depends on your destination. But we have a few fail-safe tips to help you nail down your travel day look.
Tip number one is to choose layering pieces you’ll actually wear at your destination. For example, instead of wearing your big coat to the airport, opt for a blazer that you can wear on nights out once you arrive at your hot destination. Another example would be a scarf. You may not wear it a ton at your final destination, but it will come in handy in overly air-conditioned restaurants or if you’re visiting a religious site (to throw over your shoulders).
Next, plan to wear the same travel outfit to and from. That may depend on how much your sweat or if you really don’t like to re-wear clothing. But if you can plan to wear the same travel outfit there and back, it’ll save room in your suitcase and the headache of picking out 2 travel outfits.
Our last tip is to try to avoid overthinking it. When you start overthinking, you start overpacking! Remember that when you’re leaving or coming home to a cold climate, you’re probably only going to be outside for a short amount of time. Keep that in mind when you’re deciding coat versus blazer, boots versus sneakers, jeans versus sweatpants…you get the idea!
