How to Style a Long Maxi Skirt + Meet Fellow Blogger “Style at a Certain Age”

I’ll show you one simple and effortless way to style your long, maxi skirt below, but first I want to talk about a sweet friend I had the opportunity to connect with in Georgia.

Style at a Certain Age

Her name is Beth Djalali and her blog is… Style at a Certain Age. She started blogging several years ago in order to build a platform to help sell her romance novel. Well, the book is still in the works, but her ‘side gig’ sure is paying off! She has found amazing and admirable success as both a blogger and YouTuber. I met Beth and her husband, Mr. Style (as she affectionately refers to him) during my family’s stay on Sea Island. It is always so great to be able to talk business with a fellow blogger, but with Beth…it’s even more special. I respect and admire Beth, and I think she does everything in life with grace and elegance. I also feel very connected to her. You know how you have that certain bond with some people?  I’m thrilled to share more about Beth in this post!

More About Beth Djalali

Beth grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and currently lives in Georgia, but she has literally lived all over the world.. I find this fascinating, and enviable. She has lived everywhere from Vietnam to Texas!  And, she’s been married (to the same man) for 35 years! When I asked them both about the secret to a long marriage, Mr Style had the sweetest answer about acceptance. He also shared how Beth is his angel, which made me tear up. Beth’s style philosophy is very similar to mine, if you look great, you feel great so it’s important to make the time. She also features quite a bit of budget friendly options.

Working Out

Beth has slimmed down quite a bit in recent months due to a new workout lifestyle that she talks at length about on her website here. She makes the important distinction of referring to the program as a lifestyle versus the d-word. I think you will find her story and journey very inspiring. I know I do! If you are curious about my workouts, you can read about the program I’m doing, called BBG… here.

More On Style…

I love Beth’s outlook on Style (at a certain age). I wanted to ask her a few style questions that I think you want to hear more about.

1) What are your thoughts about style and age? Should we modify what we wear as we get older?

Style has no expiration date. It’s all about looking and feeling good at any age. And clothes can help with that because if you feel great in an outfit you step out the door with confidence. And nothing is more attractive than a confident woman.

2) Most important style tip?

Accessories make or break your look. So go ahead and invest in a handbag or two (they last for years) and add to your shoe collection little by little if you have to. But your best accessory is a fabulous haircut!

3) What is your go-to look?

I lovingly refer to my style uniform as the 4-B’s – blazer, button down, blue jeans, and ballet flats. If I’m headed out in the evening I’ll exchange the flats for heels.

Styling Your Maxi Skirt

With a maxi skirt, there are a couple of things you have to think about: 1) It’s generally a flowy piece, so your top should be streamlined or tucked to offset that volume and, 2) It’s a lot of fabric so if you wear a printed, long skirt (like I am above) you should wear something simple and neutral on your upper body, like a tee or cami. I chose to pair my AFRM skirt (sold out, similar here) with a simple Madewell white tee. This is one of my favorites! The sandals, by the way, are incredibly comfortable, flattering on your feet, and a best seller across the board among fashion bloggers. You’ll love them!

Side note: the photo above is the one where Elizabeth looked the LEAST annoyed. 😉

  1. I’m a 52 year old woman with large breasts….I would love to wear the little camis you do but i need support. how can i get the look while wearing a bra?

  2. I am 57 and have always favored a classic, preppy style. (Talbots, lands end) Sadly, Menopause has dramatically changed what is in my closet and what I can wear. I have lost 15 pounds since January with 15 to go! Slow process but I am slowly able to wear the clothes that have been waiting patiently for me in my closet! Some are outdate….so I STUMBLED upon your Youtube channel and Beth’s channel. You have both been very helpful! Funny to see you meet up at Sea island. Yours are the only channels/websites i have found to be helpful and that I can relate to. I really need someone like you to help me sort out my closet!
    Thaks to you bothj!

She ran in the chicago marathon last year and won a lotTery sPoT to run in the NYC maratHon This year, she is so excited and i understand the pride you have in your husband running!
