Black Skirt Styles
Before we dive into some fun outfit ideas and how to wear your black skirt, let’s first discuss the different cuts and which silhouette will fit and flatter your body best. If you aren’t sure which body shape you have, this post would be an excellent place to start.
- Straight Skirt – A straight skirt or pencil skirt will flatter a rectangle body shape emphasizing your legs and lean silhouette and will accentuate curves if you have an hourglass shape.
- A-Line Skirt – An A-line skirt will flare out slightly from the waist creating balance and drawing attention toward a narrow waist. These skirts are great for triangle body shapes, inverted triangle, and hourglass.
- Full Skirt – A high-waisted full skirt will work well on a circle body shape helping to add waist definition as well as an inverted triangle to create volume on the lower half of the body.
- Mini, Midi, and Maxi Skirts – Skirt length depends on your comfort level, but if you love your legs, go for a mini skirt. If you are trying to minimize hips, butt, and thighs a maxi or midi might make you feel more confident!
12 Black Skirt Outfit Ideas
Now for the outfit inspiration! Here are 6 standout black skirts each styled 2 ways, giving you lots of options and highlighting just how versatile the right black skirt can be…
Black Pencil Skirt
A pencil skirt can be a great option for the office paired with a pretty silk blouse, structured blazer, and pumps. Then, with a few easy swaps, the same skirt can also be sexy for date night. You can add a lace top or t-shirt, swap out the blazer for a leather moto jacket, and add some open-toe sandals. This pencil skirt by Susana Monaco is made of a wrinkle-resistant jersey knit that is polished, comfortable, and the perfect weight for all seasons. It’s a pull-on style so it’s super easy to put on and go.
Black Leather Midi Skirt
Fall is really just around the corner. A leather skirt is so lovely for the fall, holiday parties, and dressier dinners or get-togethers. It may even be a great option for work depending on your office environment. But a leather skirt can also look super chic dressed down with a simple t-shirt, denim jacket, and sneakers. You’ll get much more bang for your buck if you optimize the styling options for your leather skirt and think outside the box. This Ramy Brook faux leather skirt has a flattering asymmetrical hemline and cascading ruffle down the front. It’s edgy, feminine, and cool…a fabulous fashion trifecta! If a black leather mini skirt outfit is more your jam…I shared a beautiful one below.
Black A-Line Maxi Skirt
A-line skirts are SO forgiving because they skim the body without clinging to it. This maxi wrap skirt from Anthropologie ties at the side adding waist definition. The ruffle details at the hem and down the front add such a lovely feminine touch. It also comes in both Petite and Regular lengths, so you’ll find your perfect fit. For an edgy look, you can wear it with a sleeveless sweater tank, a denim jacket, and some combat booties. You could also style it with a cropped button-down, a simple white t-shirt, and some sneakers.
Black and white is a hot color combo that’s very on-trend this year. In this post I share a black and white, printed a-line skirt and how to style it.
Black Slip Skirt
A black slip skirt is another versatile black skirt option that can be dressed up or down and really is perfect for SO many occasions, and so easy to wear. For example, on the left, you can see that a tweed cropped blazer, cami, and sandals give it that extra-dressy, polished vibe. Then, on the right, you’ll see that a neutral short-sleeved sweatshirt or brightly colored long-sleeved sweatshirt and sneakers give it a fresh edgy look. You could also glam it up with a black turtleneck or fitted sweater, some fun statement earrings, and sexy heels. The slip skirt by Vince is bias cut and has a bit of stretch with an elastic waistband. It has a relaxed fit, so it skims your body…it’s not too clingy which tends to be a more forgiving fit for silky fabrics!
Black Denim Skirt
Have you noticed all the denim skirts that are so popular at just about every retailer lately? It’s kind of a 1980s throw back! A denim skirt can be a nice alternative to jeans when you want to be comfy and stylish but switch things up a little. This black denim skirt by Reformation checks all the boxes for me. It’s midi or maxi length (depending on your height), it has a cool raw edge hem, a flattering slit in the front (that isn’t TOO high), and an interesting cross-over detail at the waist. The denim is medium-weight and non-stretch, so it won’t get baggy over time. I’d wear this casually with a chunky sweater and loafers…Or with a cropped tank and cardigan and some tall black boots for date night.
BONUS – Black Cargo Skirt
I wanted to add a wild card black skirt to the mix…this cargo-inspired, long black skirt. All things utility and cargo are very on-trend right now and this would be a fun and versatile way to try the trend. This particular skirt from Anthropologie doesn’t have a ton of pockets so it’s a pretty mild way to embrace cargo. You can wear it with a classic white button-down, sweater vest and booties, or try it with a vest (another hot trend!) and some cute sneakers. What’s so unique about this skirt is the fabric. One of our team members has pants in the same magic fabric and she says it’s amazing and slimming! It sculpts without being too tight and it stretches so you really get a customized fit. I love the flattering high waist and front patch pockets.
