How To Wear Denim On Denim
Calling all denim lovers…? Is that YOU?? Well, if you love denim as much as I do, you’re in for a real treat with this post. We’re talking DOUBLE denim below or more commonly referred to as “denim on denim.” All things denim are really on-trend right now. Think denim shoes, and bags in addition to your traditional jeans and denim jackets. While denim on denim often looks really cool and modern, it can be tricky to style. But, don’t worry…we have a few simple hacks to help you nail it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Oh, and I might have buried the lead because everything we are sharing in this post is on sale! It’s actually all part of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. If you have questions about the sale or want to shop our favorites, make sure you check out this post. I also shared 13+ other NSale Outfits in this post if you’re in shopping mode.
Huge thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Tip #1) Mix Your Shades
The first tip for nailing your double denim look is to vary your denim shades. You can see in the photos above that my shirt and jeans are two different denim washes which helps create contrast. Varying tones and textures adds excitement and style to your look whether it’s double denim or a monochrome outfit. You can also play around with different color denim, like white or black for example.
We will continue with more styling tips below, but first… a moment for this outfit! I never would have put it together if I hadn’t gone into Nordstrom and simply started playing around with different pieces (AKA dress up for grown-ups). I didn’t even notice most of these pieces online, but now, I’m completely in love. I will definitely be wearing this look here in Colorado, but you could wear this for everything from running errands to dinner to music festivals and concerts. It’s just an incredibly cool, and versatile outfit. Plus, each of the pieces are so versatile that you can wear them separately with other items in your wardrobe.

Rails Chambray Shirt
This shirt is a really cool western-inspired shirt by Rails. It’s chambray so it’s very lightweight, comfortable, and soft. The material is thin enough to tuck into jeans, pants or skirts with any bunching or bulging around the tummy. It has really interesting details like pearl snap buttons and western stitching. It’s body-skimming (not fitted) and not too oversized. I left the sleeves down but you could roll them up if you wanted. I love this outfit altogether, but you can use every single piece in a multitude of ways. There’s so much versatility and wearability with each piece. I’ll style this shirt with shorts, skirts, trousers, and white denim too!
Quick note about the necklace I’m wearing. It’s this really cool toggle necklace by AllSaints that would make a great everyday necklace. It’s impactful, but still small enough to wear daily… and it’s silver and gold!

Paige Wide-Leg Jeans
These Paige jeans weren’t even on my radar during the preview, but I loved them as soon as I tried them on! Wide-leg jeans are so on-trend right now and I like that these aren’t too wide. They’re a great medium wash, have a raw hem, and are high-rise. The denim has some structure to it, so you feel secure in the tummy area. They have a 31” inseam which works perfectly on me with a small heel (I’m 5’4”). You can wear these jeans with pretty much every top in your closet, making them super versatile!
Sizing: They run a little big. I recommend sizing down one size.
Tip #2) Strategic Accessories
Okay, continuing on with our style tips for wearing double denim…
Another fail-safe way to nail double denim EVERY. SINGLE. TIME…break it up with strategic accessories. Adding accessories creates more visual contrast and helps make the outfit look more polished. Keep in mind that the accessories will completely transform the vibe of the outfit. For example, I could take this look to next-level cowgirl and wear a cowboy hat, western-inspired boots, and a belt with a large buckle. Instead, I chose to go less western and styled the look with wedges, a straw hat, a sleek handbag, and a classic belt.
So…to recap: #1 DO mix tones and textures and, #2 Choose strategic accessories to break up the double denim. Another key tip… wear your look with confidence. If you feel self-conscious and uncomfortable, that will show. But, if you walk out the door with your head held high, feeling that fit… well, you’ll get compliments galore!

Vince Wedges
I have these wedges in a lighter tan color and love them so when I saw this darker brown shade in the NSale this year I was so excited! These wedges are super comfortable (for heels), easy to walk in, and amazingly versatile. You’ll wear them all summer as well as into fall and then again in the spring. Pair these mules with pants, jeans, shorts, dresses, and skirts.
Coach Convertible Handbag
I love love LOVE this tan Coach bag! It’s incredibly sleek, sophisticated, and chic. You can wear it as a shoulder bag or as a crossbody and it also comes in black. If you don’t already have a classic handbag, I highly recommend grabbing this! It comes in black too. BTW, it’s perfect for travel as it is really quite sturdy and structured.
Kate Spade Reversible Belt
Every woman needs a reversible belt and this one by Kate Spade is such a wonderful price point. I also love that it’s a little slimmer and has very simple, minimal hardware. The tan is a really nice, versatile color and the reverse side is black. The tan/black version keeps going in and out of stock but the tan/pink version is still in stock.

Rag & Bone Straw Hat
I completed the outfit with a straw hat by Rag & Bone. This brand always has chic, high-quality hats and this one was no exception. I love the interesting and unique striped band and that it’s packable…big win! A quick note on these sunnies…Ray-Ban sunglasses are usually too small for my face, but these are a little bigger (59mm) and work perfectly!
