A tank dress is easily one of the best items women over 40 can wear during the summer! It’s easy to throw on with sandals or sneakers and be ready in seconds! Or dress it up for a sexy date night with strappy heels. Plus, depending on the style, tank dresses are very flattering. But the best thing about a tank dress? You can wear a regular or racerback bra! Nobody (especially women over 40) wants complicated undergarments when our lives are as busy as they are! Find my favorite tank dresses for summer below…
#1 | Tie-Dye Tank Dress
This dress by Michael Stars is AMAZING! I love the hot pink…it’s one of my favorite colors. But the best part is the white along the sides of the dress is strategically placed to shave inches off your waist…it’s SO slimming. I’m not kidding…it’s magical! I also love the midi length (I’m 5’4” for reference), which is very appropriate for women over 40 who don’t like to show too much leg! You can wear a regular racerback bra with this dress…see one of my favorites here.
#2 | A-Line Tank Dress
What I love about this tank dress is the A-line silhouette. It’s fitted through the top for support and then starts to flare out around the hips making it super forgiving in all the right places. This silhouette will mask bigger hips, butt, and thighs. The square neckline is also very flattering and unique. And can we talk about the length…? Yay for longer skirts! This exact dress is sold out but I linked a similar option!
#3 | Gray Ribbed Tank Dress
This tank dress is more fitted, but it’s SOOOOO good! It’s a waffle knit material, but still breathable and it’s also midi length and has a cool racerback. I love the contrast between the black/gray material on the seams and the body. It’s sold out right now but I linked a similar option!
#4 | Black Fitted Tank Dress
I featured this dress in my work from home outfit video. It’s so comfortable and I love that it hits below the knee. I threw on a cardigan with it to stay warm around the house but it’s perfect with just sneakers for a casual day out this summer!

I agree that a tsnk type dresd is gt for every mom. However, when i look at pict and i try to imagine myself going to the gr or running errands- in an outfit- i think about who i might see, who might see me. IN SMALLER COMMUNITIES, it’s Not usually cOnsidered appropriate for moms to show cleavage in the day hours. AlSo, dresses and tops need to be bra friendly. Going braless is coNsidered in poor tasTe unless we are talking beach wear(which would call for a cover up anyway.)
The black one, which comes in several colors, is more forgiving than the gray. You can wear a regular bra with it and you do not see every lump and bump. In a couple of photos shooting down, it looks more chesty… but it’s really not. Runs true to size.
Love the ease of tank dresses. However mterS have gotten so light.. they seem to show every Dimple And bump…
any options you may know of with thicker fabrics?? Or is there a LIGHTWEIGHT smoother or such?
the black one has an a-line skirt and is much more forgiving than the gray. The fabric is NOT paper thin either. Plus, you can wear a normal bra. Hope that helps… Erin xo
Erin those white pumps are sold out in my size (7.5) everywhere 🙁 Hoping they get a restock. Love the white bag too.
Hi Erin- Thank you for this post on tank dresses- A great option for summer and so much more doable for someone older and a little more concerned about coverage- i enjoy your posts and your adventures- thank you for your excellent style advise-
Thanks, Robin! I just ordered the black tank dress in beige and charcoal too. It’s THAT good.
