Travel Skincare Routine For Glowing Skin While Traveling During The Holidays

We love the holidays! With seasonal festivities, glamour and beauty all around, it really is the most wonderful time of year.  But sometimes that joy comes at a price.  If you find yourself sleeping less, eating more, and watching your routine fly out the window, you’re not alone.  The holidays can take a toll on our mind and body, and when you’re dealing with things like stress, busy schedules, and family travel, it’s sure to affect your skin as well.  That’s why it’s even more important during the holidays to find practical skincare travel tips that work.  While you’re in the air, on the road, or just spending a few nights away from home, it’s important to maintain a good skincare regimen. Unfortunately, it can be hard to figure out how to do just that. But you’re in luck! I’ve gathered the best proven skincare travel tips to ensure your skin remains glowing and as healthy as possible.  This travel skincare routine is your best defense when holiday chaos threatens to wreak havoc on your skin.  Let’s get to it!

Keep Your Routine But Make It Basic

Busy schedules, lack of sleep and overindulgence can throw anyone off, but it’s important to stick to your skincare routine. It doesn’t have to be exactly the same, because packing full-size products can be a challenge. I mean, do you really need your LED mask and micro needling tool for your trip? Minimize your skincare products when traveling by keeping to the basics. For me, that means vitamin C serum, sunscreen, cleanser, moisturizer or oil, and retinol. Check out all of my skincare essentials in this post.

Pro tip: Pack your ‘almost empties’ so you can toss them out before you return home.

Go Light On The Makeup

To maintain radiant skin on travel days, go light on the makeup or skip it altogether. Makeup, especially when combined with lower humidity levels, recirculated air, and increased stress, can clog your pores and dry out your skin. If you can’t go without, choose lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas or skin tint (you know how I love those!).

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

To minimize jet lag and make your skin feel like it’s immune to traveling woes, skip the alcohol and caffeine, however tempting they may be, and stick with water. Drinking plenty of water not only ensures you stay hydrated, it helps to ensure your skin stays healthy and radiant. Also, be sure to use hydrating skincare products like rich moisturizers, face oils, and a hydrating facial or sheet masks. Products with hyaluronic acid really make a difference, since hyaluronic acid can absorb and retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to leave the skin looking healthy and refreshed. I also make a point to pack my collagen powder. It helps! Lastly, if you travel often, consider investing in a mini humidifier They are small, easy to pack, and really make a difference for all skin types, especially if you have sensitive skin or prefer a minimal skincare regimen.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

Between the cold winter weather and dull overcast skies, it’s easy to forget about protecting your skin from the sun, but don’t let the forecast fool you. You might not feel or even see the sun’s rays. but they can still cause skin damage. You should wear sunscreen every day, regardless of your travel plans, but especially if you’re traveling by plane. When flying at high altitudes you’re at greater risk of UV exposure, so do yourself a favor and make UPF protection part of your daily skincare routine. Apply SPF before you start your day (Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen is a team favorite) and reapply every couple of hours. Take a travel size SPF with you, then keep the window shade down and enjoy your flight!

Fake It

When your patience is as limited as the space in airplane cabins, the turkey is dry, your in-laws are fighting or you’ve eaten too many cheese balls, then by all means take a deep breath and just go with it. Pour yourself a tall glass of something. Get yourself a pretty lipstick, cream blush, and dewy highlighter and fake that glow. You deserve it!

Keep Your Routine

Busy schedules, lack of sleep and overindulgence can throw anyone off. But just like your workouts, it’s important to stick to your skincare routine. It doesn’t have to be exactly the same, because packing full-size products can be a challenge. You know I love a good LED mask and micro-needling tool. But, I don’t bother taking these tools along while traveling (who has the room?). I keep to the basics of a double cleanse, vitamin C serum, sunscreen, moisturizer or oil, and retinol. I like to pack my ‘almost empties’ so I can toss them out before I come back home. I also like to pack samples of products I want to try, especially things like moisturizers, oils or hydrating masks (perfect after air travel). Of course, I don’t try 10 new products at once, but I might experiment with one or two while keeping everything else consistent.

Go Light on Makeup

If you’re traveling for more than a few hours, it’s best to go really light on the makeup. It can clog your pores and pull moisture from your skin. And, the longer you wear it, the more damage it does. Remember, your skin is already battling the ultimate travel bummer: dry, recirculated air. I recommend either skipping makeup or wearing a lightweight skin tint (you know how I love those!). Since most are skincare hybrids, you'll get the protective benefits of the added active ingredients.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Drink water, skip the alcohol and caffeine (I know, it's not fair) and apply products that hydrate. Rich moisturizers, face oils, masks and other products with hyaluronic acid really make a difference. Remember, hyaluronic acid can absorb and retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it a powerful hydrator. It can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to leave the skin looking healthy and refreshed. I also make a point to pack my collagen powder. It helps! If you're traveling for any length of time, consider investing in a mini humidifier. They are small, easy to pack, and really help keep skin glowy and bouncy.
