I recently shared some of the trends that have taken over in 2021 in this post and it was a HUGE hit! Since you all loved it so much, I decided to do another trend roundup with what spring and summer trends will be hot this year! These are the trends that I think will be very popular, but they are also VERY wearable… and appropriate for women of all ages.
Note: If you don’t like trends, you do not have to try these! I’m simply sharing the knowledge for anyone that wants to get out of their comfort zone!
1) Getaway Ready
We missed out on our vacations and special events in 2020 but now we’re going to be ready with our getaway-ready wardrobe! Think exuberant prints, unusual prints styled together, and bold colors. This is escapism in all of its glory! You can wear this trend by throwing on a gorgeous floral maxi dress or pretty separates. Basically, anything you’d wear on vacation to a resort will be “in” this spring and summer!
2) Under the Sea
Before you shake your head in disapproval… after seeing this image (above) of a Versace dress that looks fit for Ariel of The Little Mermaid…I couldn’t help but fall in love with the trend! Hear me out. Not only are there beautiful sea-themed prints perfect for any beach getaways. But the more wearable way to sport this trend… try fishnet! Your mind probably went right to tights…but that’s NOT what I mean! Consider trying a fishnet sweater or swim coverup. That’s doable, right?? Fishnet is a really sexy option… you can wear it over a top and show just a hint of skin. This is perfect for women of all ages!
3) Knits Galore!
We talked about elevated loungewear in our last trends post. SO many designers came out with knit pieces. It’s functional and appropriate for the times, but when it’s thoughtfully designed with gorgeous silhouettes, it can also be incredibly chic! And the really amazing part about this trend… LOTS of elastic waistband pants. LOTS. Yay! We’re also seeing modern, sporty track pants with silky blouses…which sounds like the perfect outfit for a Zoom call to me! By the way, I have the most embarrassing Zoom story EVER in this post in case you missed it!
4) Boyish
For those of you who LOVE menswear… this is YOUR year! Boyfriend blazers, boxy blouses, relaxed-fit, pleated trousers. The boxier and more over-sized… the better. Masculinity is IN. Even pinstripes are big, which is amazing because the print is so slimming! If I wear something that is very masculine, I like to offset that with something feminine like lace, ruffles, or puff sleeves. I talk about how to mix styles like a pro in this post. On the accessory side, we’re seeing a lot of loafers with chunky heels too!
5) Oversized Shoulders
I know this trend is polarizing as some of you don’t like strong or puffy shoulders, but for those of you with narrow, sloping shoulders…like me, this is an awesome trend that will also make your waist look tinier! A subtle way to rock this… try a tee or top with slightly structured shoulders. You don’t have to go ALL in….ever. That’s the beauty of trends!
6) Modern Button-Down
You know how much I love elevated basics! That’s why I’m so excited that this spring/summer, the updated button-down is on-trend. Think big sleeves, longer lengths, deconstructed, cutouts, and an oversized fit. With this fit, make sure you wear something more streamlined on the bottom…I could see wearing this with a pair of medium wash jeans and sandals or sneakers for a simple spring outfit running errands!
7) The Updated Trench
Along the same lines…elevated, updated trenches are also on trend this year! The trench gets a slight update every year but this year we’re seeing interesting slits, dramatic lapels, drop waists, and bold sleeves! You can always go with a classic trench, but it’s fun to think about these modern updates.
8) Statement Collars
The statement collar trend is really interesting and I love the idea of adding some interest to the neckline (especially for Zoom calls when that’s all anyone sees)! You’ll see this trend mostly on sweaters and tops. Everything from popped collars to ruffles to lace! This could be good for building up the shoulder if that’s flattering on your body shape. It will draw the eye, for sure! I have this pretty black Alice + Olivia sweater with a contrasting white collar that could fall into the trend but I linked a few other favorites!
9) Sexy Sheer Pieces
I talked about how sheer fabric can be really sexy in my how to look hot at any age video. Light, sheer fabrics are beautiful for spring. Especially in a really pretty spring color! Everything from sheer tops to flowy sheer skirts and dresses are in! I have this sheer lace corset top but for spring, you could try a similar top in a lighter color! Or a beautiful flowy midi skirt like this one I wore while we were in Paris 2 years ago.
10) Neon & Pastel Colors
I love finding out what the newest “it” colors are each season! Sometimes women over 40 stay away from trying new colors, but I think it’s a fun, youthful way to try a trend. And grabbing a top in the latest color trend usually won’t break the bank! This spring, it seems like basically anything either neon or pastel is on-trend! Some of the biggest neon colors you’ll see are bubblegum pink, tangerine orange, tennis ball green, and yellow. Pastels include lavender, mint green, and pale blue!
Bonus Trends!
- Leather Anything – This was another tip I suggested in my how to look hot at any age video. It seems weird to suggest leather for spring or summer but there are some really gorgeous, lightweight leather pieces out there. Last year I bought this white vegan leather skirt by Nanushka. For spring, look for leather pieces in lighter colors to get that springtime feel!
- Second Skin Tops – I’ll admit that the name of this trend doesn’t sound great. Second-skin tops are tops that fit your body so well they’re basically a second skin. If you can get past the name, this really is a great trend to try! They’re easy to wear and layer. Plus, they can transition from season to season!
- Feathers – This one is fun if you’re a more adventurous trend-trier or fashionista! We’re seeing feathers on cuffs of tops and sweaters and even all over dresses! If you’re not sure this is a trend you can wear in public, try a cute feathered pajama set like this. These are called glam jammies…aka glammies!

Love these! I think I’m going to try one of the sexy sheer tops. It might be tricky to not look like my teenage daughter but with some simple classy jeans – I bet I could pull it off!
