Jean Trend Glossary
I recently featured a look in my work from home outfits video where I wore some cool, oversized jeans. Right now is a great time to try out those new jean styles or trends that you might be a little unsure about. You can wear them around the house to see if you like them first! Jean trends are moving away from the skinny jeans and more into oversized silhouettes. I love skinny jeans but I’m also excited about something new! I’m going to try to cover as many jean styles as possible but obviously there are a lot more! And within each style, there are different details that can change the look of the jeans. There are also dozens of these micro-trends.

#1 | Baggy/Oversized Jeans
As I mentioned, we’re moving away from skinny jeans and toward more oversized styles. I bought a pair of baggy jeans last fall and loved them. You can see them in this post. This month, I bought some new oversized jeans by Agolde. These jeans have a cool asymmetrical button closure that I love. (That is one of those micro-trends I mentioned earlier). One thing I really like about baggy jeans is that they’re comfortable and I don’t feel confined. Plus, they’re super stylish! Remember your volume proportion rule and wear something more stream-lined on top. If you have a baggier top or sweater, just be sure to tuck or half-tuck it in.
#2 | Flare Jeans
Flare jeans have been around for a while but they’re super popular right now. Flare jeans are fitted around your thighs and start to flare out at the knee. You can go for a wide-leg pair of jeans. These would be roomy all the way down through the legs and flare slightly from the hips down towards the hemline.

#3 | Straight Jeans
Straight jeans have, you guessed it, straight legs! Instead of flaring out or getting skinnier around the ankles, they have a consistent width throughout. These are probably the most popular style right now and I love them! They feel fresh while also feeling wearable.

#4 | Cropped Jeans
Cropped jeans are a petite woman’s saving grace. If you’re shorter and you read that a pair of jeans is cropped online, it means they’ll probably fit you like regular jeans… perfectly! But if you’re taller, cropped jeans should hit between the bottom of your calf and your ankle bone. They’re great to style with taller booties or if you just want to show off a gorgeous shoes!

#5 | Crop Flare Jeans
Crop flare jeans are the same as cropped jeans but instead of a skinny style, they flare out at the bottom. You have maybe heard them referred to as baby bootcut or kick flare too. I love cropped flare jeans! Especially since I’m petite. I never have to get them hemmed! These jeans can make your legs look shorter so be sure to opt for a higher rise pair and wear shoes in a similar tone to keep the line longer.

#6 | Mom Jeans
In the past, mom jeans were considered a negative term or unflattering style. Do any of you remember the mom jeans SNL skit? Ha! But mom jeans are back and cooler than ever! You’ll know they’re mom jeans if you’re really high rise and have a more relaxed fit in the zipper area. And, they are usually in some sort of a light wash.
#7 | Tapered Leg Jeans
Some of my favorite jeans of the year have a tapered leg. You’ve probably seen me wearing these Moussy Vintage jeans on Instagram, YouTube, or here on the blog. I love them! Tapered jeans just mean that they get a little skinnier toward the ankle but stay relaxed throughout the rest of the leg.

#8 | Wide Leg Jeans
Wide leg jeans are very popular right now! They have a more relaxed fit and wider leg from the knee down. Most wide-leg jeans you’ll see are cropped but there are some full leg styles as well.

Other Jean Trends
Of course, there are so many other jeans styles and sub-trends out there. Some styles I missed are girlfriend, boyfriend, bootcut, and slim bootcut. You can find even more info in this post.
What are some of your favorite jeans styles? Are you happy skinny jeans are phasing out!? Or are you sad to see skinnies go? I would love to see you in one of the new styles. Grab a pic in the mirror and email it to: erin@busbeestyle.com
