Step Out of Your Comfort Zone: 5 Summer Trends Worth Taking a Risk On

New Summer Trends To Try

One thing about fashion that I absolutely love is… new trends! Trying to figure out how to make them work for my style so that I feel confident is always a fun way to play around in my closet. With all trends, you should only try the ones that really speak to you or that you love. And just because a trend is being styled online or on Instagram in a certain way, doesn’t mean you have to wear it exactly like that! Try a trend out in your unique way, with pieces from your own closet that make you feel good. While I don’t recommend trying trends you don’t love, I do recommend getting outside of your comfort zone and trying new things. Below, I’m sharing four fashion trends that were calling to me that you can wear now through summer and into fall…

Green Summer Trends in Fashion

#1) Vests

The first trend that you’ve probably seen taking over your Instagram feed and street style is vests. I love this menswear-inspired trend! Each year, suiting gets an upgrade. For example, in the past we’ve seen huge shoulder pads in blazers, pinstripe suits, oversized blazers, etc. This year, we’re seeing this “suiting” trend upgraded to vests worn more casually, which is SO great because it makes it more wearable.

In this look, I styled the vest the easiest way possible…as a matching set! I’m wearing a beautiful olive green vest and pants by Ramy Brook. The vest fits like a glove in the best way but there are plenty of options out there and you can go with something more oversized or loose fitting if that’s your style or how you’re planning to wear it (more options linked below). I love the gold tone buttons down the front that make it feel a little more polished. The V-neckline is super flattering and the overall fit-and-flare fit really highlights the waist. I styled them with the matching pants but here are a few other ways to style a vest if this is a trend that’s calling your name…

  • With blue or white jeans & sneakers
  • Over a white button-down shirt
  • With tapered trousers
  • Under a blazer and with trousers as a 3-piece suit
  • Paired with a mini skirt
  • With a long skirt & booties
  • With shorts

#2) Cargo Pants

Another huge trend right now that will be sticking around through fall…cargo pants! There are SO many cargo pant options out there, and it can be tricky to find a pair that fit and flatter your body. I recommend finding some with a wide-leg, high rise, and that have pocket placements that aren’t too high up on the hip. Some pocket placements can actually make the hips look larger than they are so it’s something to keep in mind when you’re shopping for your cargo pants. These pants by Ramy Brook are SO good. I love the high-rise, wider leg, and pocket placement. The color is also really pretty, and I love them styled with the matching vest. But you can style cargo pants in so many ways. It’s this simple…think about how you’d wear your wide-leg or baggy jeans and then just swap in some cargo pants. Instead of your go-to jeans, tee, and sneakers look…wear cargo pants, the tee, and sneakers. Easy-peasy!

Purple Summer Trends

#3) Crochet

Crochet has been around since fall of last year, but it really took off during this spring/summer. I wore a beautiful gold crochet top while I was in Paris earlier this year and really hoped the trend would stick around…and it did! I recently picked up this pretty light purple crochet detail sweater by Veronica Beard. It’s a cable knit sweater that has cool crochet details on the arms and on the chest, which is a nice way to try the trend without completely diving in. This sweater also comes in a pretty green and I’m linking a few other crochet options below. A crocheted top or sweater is the easier way to wear this trend because all you have to do is throw on jeans, shorts, pants, and skirts. But if you’re feeling really risky or just love the trend that much, you could even try a crochet dress or skirt.

#4) Cutouts

Next up is a trend that is pretty polarizing. Cutouts! I love wearing cutouts as long as I find pieces that have strategic cutouts. Cutouts that hit just under the bust are ideal because that is typically the slimmest part of most women’s bodies. I’ve worn quite a few pieces with cutouts over the past couple of years, which shows that the trend has been around for a while and isn’t going anywhere. In the looks above, I’m wearing a midi dress by A.L.C. and a mini dress by Cinq à Sept that both have strategically flattering cutouts. Both dresses are great options if you’re looking to try out the cutout trend but I also linked a few other options below…

#5) Cropped Blazers

I don’t completely consider this a trend because it’s been “in” for so long now! But we are seeing a lot more cropped blazers from different brands, on social platforms, and in street style so I wanted to share a super wearable way to try the trend. Cropped blazers are a really great option for petite women because of the length and where they hit the waist, but anyone can wear them! In the look above, I’m wearing a white A.L.C. cropped blazer with a white tank, classic dark-wash jeans, and white booties. But you could wear your blazer…

  • Over a midi, mini & maxi dress
  • Paired with matching pants
  • With tapered or wide-leg trousers
  • With blouses, button-downs, camis & tanks
  • Paired with shorts & skirts

So happy to read your post. I have a short, open, white crocheted vest I bought on sale at Neiman Marcus years and years ago. I have been tempted to donate it, but something kept telling me not to, that someday I will wear it! So now I will! Thank you!
