Who has stood in their closet full of clothes and thought, “I have NOTHING to wear”? I’m willing to bet that almost all of you have had that thought. Even I’ve had that thought and I have a studio space full of clothing racks. And, summer often makes it worse because it’s sweltering hot so you basically want to wear no clothes, but being a woman over 40, you feel like you have to cover up a bit more.
One of the keys to having a functional, usable wardrobe is to ensure you have your wardrobe basics. If you’re not sure what that includes, you can get your FREE wardrobe basics checklists when you sign up for my newsletter. Plus, some other fun freebies.
For me, one of the tougher things to find each summer is cute tops…that also give me some arm coverage. I’ve been on a mission this year, and I wanted to share my finds with you.
Take a look at these 10 cute summer tops below…
I ordered this top unsure of if I’d really like it. But, as soon as I opened up the package I knew it was a great print! It has these really gorgeous beige and brown tones and the print itself isn’t too overpowering. Sometimes prints can make you look larger than you are, but this print is beautifully done and the smaller scale keeps you looking slimmer.
This top by Free People is a cool, safari-style that has front pockets, tie cuffs, and a v-neck. It fits into that summer utility trend I’ve talked about here and here. If you missed my video on summer trends, you can watch that here.
And, look at that arm coverage!! Flabby arms be gone!! The ties on the arms allow you to control the tightness, which is such a great detail if you have bigger arms.
#3 | Linen Tee
A linen tee is a must-have wardrobe basic. I love that it’s SO lightweight and breathable. And the scoop neck hits at just the right place. It’s also super affordable! I bought this tee in beige. I also grabbed it in lavender and baby blue.
#4 | Mint Green Bodysuit
I’ve talked about how much I love this bodysuit by Amanda Uprichard! A good bodysuit can be hard to find because some of them fit so weird, but this one is longer so it’s super comfy. I love the ruched shoulder detail, v-neckline and the standout color. I shared more about the bodysuit in this post.
#5 | Black Bodysuit
I was lucky enough to find a second bodysuit that fits SO well and it’s super chic! It can be worn on or off the shoulder and it’s COMFORTABLE! It doesn’t pull or ride up like other bodysuits. It’s also one of the cuter bodysuits I’ve seen with the puff sleeves and v neckline, which is particularly great for rectangle body shapes. (Find out what your body shape is with this video.) The fabric is on the thicker side, so if you have a smaller bust, you can get away with no bra. I’m not wearing a bra in the picture above.

#6 | Frame Top
For a daytime chic look, grab a silky blouse like this one by Frame. Frame is one of my all-time favorites for blouses! They nail elevated basics. This top, for example, is a versatile basic, but the 3/4 sleeves, beautiful neckline and balloon sleeves make it special. I paired this top with shorts. I share great tips on how to wear shorts over 40 in this post.
#7 | Puff Sleeve Top
This top was so nice, I bought it twice! I love the v-wire and ruching around the bust. It’s so sexy and it’s supportive enough that you don’t have to wear a bra! I also love the puff sleeves… Remember, I like drama in my clothes, not my life! 😉 I originally bought this black version for my trip to the Bahamas and styled it with white flare jeans and black studded flat sandals. See how I styled the beige color below…
This is a wardrobe basic but definitely a great top to have in your wardrobe even if you already have a white button-down! It’s 100% cotton so it’s lightweight, breathable, and perfect for summer! See more photos of this shirt and another one by Rails here. (And…find six edgy ways to wear your white button-down shirt here.)
#9 | Ganni Green Top
I love this Ganni top! The balloon sleeves, wrap front, and fun print are super stylish! And it’s on major sale right now! It’s also another small scale print. Remember, smaller scale prints make you look smaller. See more tips on how to look slimmer here.
I featured this top in my roundup of the best white tops for summer here. It’s perfect for those of you who don’t like to show your arms but still want to stay cool during the summer. It has beautiful lace details and a billowy fit. I love the way it looks tucked into jeans. It is quite sheer as you can see, so you have to wear a nude bra, camisole, or bralette underneath.
