Best Places To Shop Over 40
I shop A LOT. I mean a lot! It’s a huge part of my job so I’m technically a professional shopper. Pretty much every day, I’m browsing my favorite online retailers to find the best new fashion finds to show all of you! I have a few go-to places I like to check for super chic pieces to elevate my style that I want to share with you…
I’ve also written posts on the best retailers for curvy women, tall women, and petite women.
#1 | Saks Fifth Avenue
Saks is another wonderful retailer for higher-quality pieces you’ll wear for years and years. Whether you’re looking for a special occasion dress or need the perfect pair of jeans to fill your wardrobe basics checklist, Saks has everything you could need to find exactly what you’re looking for!
#2 | Intermix
Intermix is my go-to retailer for high-quality, and often, luxury pieces. I can always find a really unique piece I don’t see anyone else wearing. I will say that most of the inventory is pricier but if it’s in your budget, this is a great place to shop!
#3 | Express
For more affordable pieces, Express is my favorite! I’ve been shopping at Express for 20 years and love the quality and style! They have a wide range of styles so you can get really trendy pieces if that’s your style… Or grab basics that can really elevate your look! Express is also known for offering a wide range of sizing. You can get short, regular and tall pants and jeans which really helps if you need a special inseam length (like me.) They also have tons of great sales almost every weekend!
#4 | Shopbop
Shopbop is another retailer that can be a little pricier depending on what you’re shopping for. They have a good mix of high and lower-end pieces and trendy and basic pieces. This is a great place to check if you need a dress for a special occasion or a new top for date night! They have very fashionable clothes from brands we love like Agolde, Veronica Beard, Ulla Johnson, and so many more!
#5 | Nordstrom
Nordstrom is a go-to for just about anything! They have everything from basics to special occasion pieces and more. Plus, they have some really great, high-quality brands that are affordable. A few of my favorites are Halogen, Open Edit, and Topshop! They have super simple returns and shipping is usually pretty fast.
#6 |Â Banana Republic
I stopped shopping at Banana Republic for a while but with their recent resurgence, new website, and gorgeous, elevated pieces, it’s become a new (again) favorite! While they are known for their gorgeous suiting, they also have really chic everyday pieces that are those basics with a twist I’m always talking about.
#7 | Revolve
At first glance, you might think Revolve is only for younger women. The models on the website show a LOT of skin and there are a ton of really tight-fitting, short, cropped pieces that are not ideal for those of us who are a bit more mature. BUT, I think if you are strategic with your picks and carefully select pieces that are ‘age appropriate‘ … it’s an absolute candy store of fashion! By the way, sometimes women get offended by the words, ‘age appropriate’ so I feel it’s important to clarify. You can wear whatever you want. Truly. Whatever makes you feel like a million bucks. Whatever you feel confident in… go for it!!
By ‘age appropriate‘ I’m talking about slightly longer hemlines on dresses and skirts, skipping dresses that show a TON of skin, and opting for those that only show one area of skin or have longer sleeves and more strategic silhouettes. Those are just a few examples, but again, you can wear whatever you feel amazing in!
For Basics
If you’re looking for very classic basics, I suggest Frank & Eileen, Jenni Kayne, White House Black Market, Everlane, Ann Taylor, and/or J. Crew. I always suggest looking for basics that have some sort of unique detail that elevates them. But if you’re just starting to build your wardrobe with the basics and trying to figure out what your style is, those retailers are great options! If you haven’t gotten your wardrobe basics checklists, make sure you subscribe to my newsletter here. Nordies is my #1 go to!!! The closest one is 1.5 hours but I have a Nordstrom card and they ship in 2-3 days max and have great deals! And I can return to Nordstrom rack 10 mins away if need be with ZERO return policy restrictions except alterations!
Bloomingdale’s has lost my business. They take ages to delivery, they package terrible… everything arrives damaged and funny smells and sometimes doesn’t show up at all for weeks to months and they won’t cancel the order saying it’s missing yet.
I keep meaning to go to the nearby mall to go into Express and try things on to see how the clothes fit me now compared to 20 years ago. Since Covid, the nearby mall is a ghost town of a shell of no stores. It’s a shame. We hardly have anywhere to shop! I do it ALL ONLINE!! Which is why I rely on Erin and Busbee style so much for items and prices and things to be in stock and fitting to my body type and all the accessories too!
?
Nordstrom is definitely top of all of our lists!! Love their quick shipping and simple returns. Sorry to hear of your trouble with Bloomies.. we do still love their selection, but there’s just lots of great places to shop out there that you don’t have to stick with any that you don’t love. Can’t wait for you to try out Express – it’s a great one for affordable fashion! ~Erin xo
Erin, this is a great list and I agree with your choices. I am no familiar with Intermix and will check it out. The others are on my list too. Across that range, we can find everything we need. Saks has always been my number one store (after Bendels closed and now that I am so far from Bergdorf’s, living in Los Angeles). And, Saks Off Fifth has a lot of great bargains too. Nordstrom is a treasure. Love Revolve. Great list, thank you!
SO glad to hear you love the whole list too! I know you’ll love Intermix too… it’s a great one to check out! ~Erin xo

My favorites are Anthropologie and Evereve! I’ve recently discovered some great pieces at Abercrombie and Fitch too.
stay strong, it’s really difficult for “alanon”-type people to get flack after stating their opinion. You are a wonderful blogger and I always love your content. Please ignore the “haters” they are just showing their fears. I am 64. I am retired and cannot afford many of your suggestions, but I still base my attire on your suggestions. I just do it on a less expensive scale and with many of the clothes that I already own. I get many compliments on some of your style choices. Thank you for helping me update my life. Again, stay strong. your daughter will thank you for it. I already do.
Thank you so much, Sandy. Your note is really wonderful and helpful… Erin xo
