10 Daily Habits in Your 40’s to Look & Feel Youthful (And How to Make Them Stick!)

Daily Habits

Do you ever wonder what other women do, take and/or drink to look and stay healthy, vibrant, and youthful? I definitely do! So, in today’s video and post, I’m sharing 10 things I do every day that I feel really do impact my day…and some tips to help you stick with them. Some of these things I’ve been doing for a while but some are new to my routine and I’m so excited to share them.

If you’re interested, you can watch the video version of the following post here.

Habit #1) Celery Juice

This first habit is one I’ve done before, but I recently reintroduced it into my routine. About 5 mornings a week, I’ve been drinking a glass of fresh celery juice. I recently met with a naturopath who looked at my detailed bloodwork. She suggested I start drinking celery juice to help with inflammation and joint pain. Some of the other health benefits of celery juice include detoxing the liver, providing vitamin A (which is great for hair and skin), and improving brain function and kidney health.

What I do is drink it first thing in the morning. You’ll receive maximum benefits by drinking it on an empty stomach. It does fill you up a little bit so you could wait to drink your coffee or eat breakfast for a bit.

I buy organic celery stalks (about 8 bunches) and use a juicer to juice them all on a Sunday to prep for the week. Then I put them in a tightly closed pitcher and store it in the fridge for the week. If you don’t want to deal with juicing your own celery, another option is to order it and have it sent to you. But that’s a much more expensive option.

Disclaimer: I am NOT a doctor and anything you want to take or introduce into your routine should be run by your doctor first. I’m simply sharing what works for me.

Habit #2) Vitamins

About 7 months ago, I started an experiment. I stopped taking all of my vitamins, went off all of my hormones, everything…I didn’t take anything for months because I wanted to get a new baseline of my bloodwork. When I got my bloodwork done, talked to my doctor and the naturopath, and looked back at how I was feeling through those months…I realized I needed and wanted those supportive vitamins, supplements, hormones, etc. Especially as we get older, it’s important to find what will work for you and make you feel good.

This led me to start a new vitamin regimen with a personalized vitamin company called care/of. You can go onto their site, and fill out a quiz with personal questions about what you’re looking for, what you’re struggling with, etc. Then they develop a vitamin plan for you based on what your needs are. They’ll recommend what you should try but you don’t have to go all in. I started with taking just 2 different vitamins (a multivitamin and Rhodiola) because I hadn’t been taking anything and my doctor recommended adding things back in slowly to see what really impacts how I feel. I’ve noticed a little extra energy since I started taking these. But remember, everyone is different and reacts to things differently.

The vitamins come in a long box and within that box are separate packets for each day which makes it so convenient to take them each day. At first it seemed like a lot of packaging, but each of the packets are actually recyclable, so it’s not as wasteful.

Habit #3) Collagen Powder

Another care/of product I’ve been testing is their collagen powder. And I’m in love with it! I’ve mentioned a few brands in the past but this care/of collagen powder is WAY better! The texture and taste are so much better, it blends into my coffee much easier, and I’m still getting the same benefits I got from my last collagen powder. If you’re not familiar, collagen can help with hair growth and thickness, overall skin health, and nail strength and length.

Green Smoothies | Daily Habits

Habit #4) Green Smoothies

I’ve gotten really into smoothies in the last 6-8 months. I love trying new things in my smoothies. I typically have oat milk, strawberries, banana, kale, and spinach but then I’ll experiment with other ingredients too (frozen avocados, pineapples, ginger, etc.). I’ve recently been adding the care/of protein powder as an easy way to get a little extra protein.

journaling for daily habits

Habit #5) Meditation & Journaling

I meditate and journal almost every day…usually at the same time. I like to clear my space, light a candle, turn on some meditative music, and take a few deep cleansing breaths. Then I just start writing. It’s been great for bringing me clarity, clearing my head, and just feeling calm and peaceful during the day. I love it as a way of centering myself and it’s a really important practice for me.

Some meditation apps and resources include HeadspaceCalmInsight Timer, and Chopra, and I really like Gabby Bernstein’s guided meditations.

Habit #6) Movement

Movement is another important part of my daily habits. Whether it’s taking the dog on a walk, dancing, cleaning the house, skiing, a little yoga, a 30-minute Tracy Anderson workout, etc. I’m trying to be more cognizant of moving my body for the sake of feeling better and healthier…rather than as a punishment or because I don’t like how my body looks.

I’ve talked a lot about self-love in this video in case you’re struggling with the same thing.

Habit #7) Reframe Negative Thoughts

This leads to my next daily habit, which is reframing negative thoughts. I used to tear myself down without even realizing I was doing it. The negative self-talk would start and then spiral. I’d look at different spots on my body and pick myself apart. It was so automatic. But now that I’m aware of it, I can notice the negative thoughts and reframe them. Instead of looking at the loose skin on my stomach and thinking it’s gross. I notice the skin and say “Wow, look at that amazing stomach that produced two amazing children.” And it doesn’t have to just be physical aspects. Let’s say you make a mistake…instead of beating yourself up about it or punishing yourself, say “I’m human. Everyone makes mistakes and that’s okay. It happened and now it’s time to move on and be gentle with yourself.”

This can be very difficult at first and even feel forced. But it’s like exercising…the more you do it, the stronger your muscles get. The more you reframe your thoughts, the easier it gets!

Learn Something New

Habit #8) Learn Something New

The next few habits aren’t things I do daily, but I do them regularly so I wanted to share them with you. The first is to learn something new. I’ve said this before, but I love to learn! I’m pretty much always taking a class and listening to audiobooks or podcasts. Right now, I’m listening to Ask and It Is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks which gives a roadmap for manifestation. But I pretty much always have a list of audiobooks to listen to. Learning keeps your mind active and vibrant and I really love it!

Hypnosis Daily Habits over 40

Habit #9) Hypnosis

Hypnosis has been so powerful and impactful for me. It’s a healing modality that’s been around for a long time that’s research and science-backed that proves efficacy. It can be a really beautiful and restful experience. I have a hypnosis recording I’ll listen to pretty often and always wake up feeling so good afterward.

Sauna Blanket review

Habit #10) Sauna Blanket

If you missed my post and full review of this infrared sauna blanket, you can read that here. It’s become a part of my routine over the last few months and I love it! I get in for about 30 minutes and get out feeling so refreshed. You can read the full list of benefits in this post but a few of my favorites are that it detoxes your body, improves skin, boosts mood, and is deeply relaxing!

How to Stick to Your Habits

It’s not my role to tell you what you should do. I’m simply here to give your tips and help you live your best life in whatever way I can. That’s why I shared my habits. But how do you keep these habits? Here are a few tips…

Reduce Friction

Make it easy on yourself by reducing obstacles that make it hard to keep up with habits. For example…if you sit at your desk the majority of the day, keep your vitamins on your desk instead of in your bathroom cabinet. You’ll see them every day and it will make it easier to keep up with the habit.

Habit Stack

This is where you start a new habit by pairing it with a different habit. For example, every day when I brush my teeth, I’m going to practice gratitude. Or every morning when I unload the dishwasher, I’m going to listen to a podcast. Choose what makes sense for you!

Start Small

You don’t have to meditate for 30 minutes every day. Start with a 1-minute meditation and build from there. You don’t have to do a 30-minute workout. Start by taking a 10-minute walk. Start small and build up your habits!

Reward Yourself for Your Successes

If you have a really great week, maybe you reward yourself with something really sweet and special like getting a manicure, buying the earrings you’ve been eyeing, indulging in a sweet treat, etc.

Don’t Punish Yourself if You Miss a Day

This is about consistency, not perfection! Don’t beat yourself up for missing a day or not being 100% perfect one day.

Be Flexible

You may try to set a habit and then realize it’s not working for you. It’s okay to be flexible and tweak that habit a bit. Things are constantly changing and that’s okay!
