Mixing Patterns Like A Pro

A question I get pretty frequently is how to mix patterns and still look chic and sophisticated. Do stripes go with plaid? What about 2 different floral patterns…can they coexist harmoniously in the same outfit? I get it! It can be a little bit intimidating…so here are 3 simple rules of thumb to get you started. As with most style rules, you can always choose to make your own, and just GO FOR IT, but if you are a print-mixing-phoebe, here’s how to get started!

  • Stick To a Color Story – In this photo, I’m mixing a striped blouse with a plaid blazer. It works because both pieces have a common denominator…blue. The 2 pieces share a similar color story and the blue ties both pieces together.
  • Consider Scale – When mixing patterns, it’s best to either combine one large-scale and one small-scale print together or 2 small-scale prints.
  • Add A Neutral- When mixing prints, be sure to work in a neutral piece to keep your outfit from looking too busy. The neutral will ground your outfit and let the patterns shine!

You’ll find more plaid (and luxe!) blazers in this post.
