6 Wellness Trends For Women Over 40

If you have an interest in wellness (I hope you do!), then your feed has probably been full of things you should start doing in 2023 to optimize your health. Included in the list are often some “trends” that aren’t really trends anymore. Ideas like practicing mindfulness, increasing bone and gut health, and paying attention to your sleep wellness are all important ways to keep your body, mind, and spirit healthy. As the new year gets closer though, it is fun to think about new ways to uplevel your wellness game.

Wellness Trend #1) Movement Snacks

If you have a desk job, your body sits in the same position for a large chunk of your day. Even if you work out regularly, that exercise may not be enough to combat poor posture, tight hips, and a general decrease in your mobility. Stopping work every so often to take a “Movement Snack” helps keep your body more limber. It is an easy way to add in extra steps, which helps keep your metabolism firing on all cylinders. These cute street sneakers make it easier to stay disciplined in taking those breaks.

Wellness Trend #2) MIND Dieting

The MIND diet is a combination of the Mediterranean diet and Neurodgenerative Delay diet and was created by Dr. Martha Clare Morris. MIND dieting includes eating the foods that support your mental health and wellness. Foods that are rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, leafy greens, and berries are all included in the diet. These foods may help improve brain function and decrease the risk of cognitive decline. Early studies are promising, and the foods within the diet themselves tend to be less processed and lower in sugar, which also supports your wellness. If you’re interested in the MIND diet, here’s Dr. Morris’ book and an additional cookbook for you.

Wellness Trend #3) Going Beegan

Bees are having a moment. Besides getting some spotlight from environmentalists because they help plants procreate, bee products can also improve your wellness. Enter the idea of “beegan.” Technically, a beegan is someone who doesn’t consume animal products, except for products made from insects. Even if you’re not interested in going all the way beegan, these little guys pack a pretty powerful wellness punch. The main products we use from bees for wellness are the royal jelly (lower in sugar and higher in protein than honey), the propolis (a mixture of essential oils, resins, and waxes), and pollen. Products made with these ingredients may help you boost your immune system and keep your skin looking firm and youthful – just like the Queen Bee you are! Here is an easy way to add the power of bees to your smoothies.

Wellness Trend #4) Yang-sheng

The last few years may have been all about Hygge, but now wellness trends are shifting toward the practice of Yang-sheng. Yang-sheng is the Chinese practice of turning inward during the winter season because winter is a time to focus on the “closed and hidden.” In this practice, you use the quieter part of the year to reevaluate your diet, sleep, exercise, supplement use, and other practices, so you can build up your vital energy and strength and increase your longevity. Essentially the idea is to engage in rigorous wellness practices in the winter to be strong when spring comes. According to the philosophy, some ways you can encourage winter wellness include keeping your head and feet warm, eating warm foods, getting plenty of sleep, and meditating.

Wellness Trend #5) Face Yoga

The fight against gravity is real! Just like the rest of your body, your face starts to sag as you age. And also just like your body, it’s not just the skin but the muscles in your face that get looser with time. Luckily, there are exercises you can do to help improve the tone of your muscles in your face. Face Yoga was trending last year, and it’s still going strong! The moves are easier to do than squats, and you’ll see results quicker too! For a full-face yoga workout, check out Fumiko Takatsu’s book. You can also stop signs of aging with face rollers and Gau Sha tools.

Wellness Trend #6) Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese alternative medicine that focuses on energy healing. The practitioner uses a hands-on method to transfer energy to the client, allowing them to spark emotional or physical healing. Traditionally, people practice Reiki in person, but virtual practice is possible too.  According to practitioners and proponents, Reiki works by helping you become more balanced energetically. It may help you work through trauma and chronic conditions because those ailments are considered “low vibration,” and Reiki increases your vibration, promotes relaxation, and reduces stress. Reiki practitioners often incorporate crystals, chakras, and other talisman into their healing. If you’re interested in Reiki treatment, make sure your provider is certified.

    1. Hi Emilie! Yes! It’s always good to eat locally when possible and the benefits of local honey are amazing. Thanks for the reminder! Julianna

  1. The diet for the mind is terrific and valued info….I discovered it a few years ago while caring for my mother in law. My focus is on inward winter wellness.. And adding honey to my diet and skincare. I’ve recently established a daily meditation routine with youtube channels to care for my mind, and body.. evaluations of supplements, and skin care routines for a refresh through the next months will be uplifting. Take good care 💕
